I remember going to bomber v tiger games in the early eighties when they were still riding high from their 1980 GF. Their crowds were unbelievably huge, easily the match of Collingwood and Essendon. However theyre fans are even more passionate if thats possible.

Dreamtime at the 'G last year, amazing game. You could just tell how passionate and loud the Tigers fans were through the TV. I can only imagine what it would it would have been like at the game!

Round 3 1982. Essendon on top and Richmond 2nd on the ladder. They play each other at the MCG (Richmond's home game) and the crowd... 90,564!

i doubt they will reach 70k. its interesting how teams magically have a huge a surge in membership, you wonder where they come from, but lets see how it reflects their crowd figures.

Team Games Total Average
Collingwood Magpies25 1,415,870 56,635
Hawthorn Hawks 25 1,145,476 45,819
Essendon Bombers 22 994,993 45,227
Carlton Blues 22 965,201 43,873
Richmond Tigers 22 871,504 39,614
West Coast Eagles 24 861,698 35,904
Adelaide Crows 25 805,623 32,225
Geelong Cats 23 805,070 35,003
Sydney Swans 25 797,513 31,901
Fremantle Dockers 24 739,466 30,811
Essendon are still on 47k members, didnt play any finals last year & where the second highest drawing team in the home and away season

You're underestimating how big Richmond is. The shit they have had to put up with in the last 30 years, yet still have over 50,000 members is quite amazing. Essendon would easily have over 50k members if Etihad wasn't holding them back. Unfortunately for them, they're stuck there for another 12 years unless the AFL buys the stadium in the next couple of years.

FWIW, Rucci wrote about the AFL saving up money to buy Etihad very soon but the AFLPA's CBA increase meant that the money they were saving went to that instead. Not sure how accurate the story is though, after all it is Rucci.

after winning the tital then taking on the world and winning, it looks like the storm may struggle to beat last year's membership total.
after news limited sells the dud franchise off, giving them all that free promotion and numerous membership give aways & the storm's form slowly drops off,
so will the membership
