The 'official' crowd for last nights game 2894. And it was two basketcase sides stkilda and the bulldogs battling it out in a close match so really one woulda thought bcaseleague fans woulda turned up in more numbers to this one, they woulda known they were gunna see a competitive match of footy. A shameful turnout for the basketcase KNOB cup but there's still more games to come and with the official start to the basketcase league just around the corner im excited! It should be a fantastic season down there, waaaaaayyy waaaaay down at the bottom of the table

Kardinia park is located in Geelong, it is neither Western Bulldogs or St kilda's home ground. it is a neutral venue. the game was a practice game, played mid week, in turentual rain & flooding, so bad that the game almost didn't go ahead

Its a practice comp, treated as such by every team and their fans, and isnt even covered on FTA TV. Essendon had 10 of their best 18 players out the other night. It gets small crowds every year so this year is no different to any other.

I'm sticking my oar in on this one because like NRLC I'm sick of KE's constant inability to decipher what a basketcase really is.

I'll go first to reviewing the links that were given back on page 3 on this thread, and the first one does not ID Essendon as a full blown basketcase. It was (and to a degree still is) an administrative basketcase. On field performance was not a factor and neither was crowd support. That means that money was still coming in to pay the bills and that eliminates the tag of full blown basketcase.

It's the same with Port Adelaide, although their issues were different in that it was cultural. Ever since the Power joined the AFL there was resentment towards them from the Adelaide football community after what they almost got away with in 1990. In SA football, Port are as traditionally hated as Collingwood are in Victorian football. But they are successful, and again have the back up from the finances. Port have the additional hold back of having to run two clubs in effect (Power and Port Magpies) but the sale of Football Park with the move to the Adelaide Oval will help in this regard.

The Fremantle one was probably closer to the mark, given that unlike Port Adelaide they didn't have a ready made fan base. Perth fans were geared to the Eagles and they had been a success as well. It was at the peak a marketing basketcase because they weren't connecting with fans. But there was room for them in the Perth market and that's why now they are going as well as the Eagles financially.

Now with Melbourne, they are the ONLY club currently really in trouble. But they aren't quite a basketcase even though they are close. They have a saving factor and that's their traditional fan base that dates back to their glory days in the 1950's. For context, that's what gave South Sydney their strength to fight back from oblivion. As much as I hate thugby league, that fight has to be respected by all sporting quarters. Melbourne's biggest threat is alienating their future support base, and thanks to some poor coaching decisions swinging players all over the place trying to find a winning formula it's under threat. However it's not in anywhere near as much trouble as Fitzroy were. Fitzroy were the last genuine full blown AFL basketcase.

As of right now, there are no basketcases in the AFL. There are two clubs in development so they don't count (Gold Coast and West Sydney of course) and the Suns are looking good this year. If other results fall their way they could make the eight in 2014. West Sydney should have enough money at year's end to bargain for the more experienced players they need, but they need some wins on the board to give the rookies some confidence. Otherwise the whole thing will go belly up, and frankly I hope it does because the AFL should NEVER have gone with a second Sydney club before strengthening the grass roots aspect. It's interesting though that they did the reshuffle of the NEAFL and left the Hills Eagles and Sydney Uni in there, and yet dropped clubs from Queensland and the ACT (although Tuggeranong had to be dropped - THAT club is far more like a basketcase than any of the AFL clubs!).

But as far as genuine basketcases go, I'll give you the perfect one. Callington/United Eagles. KE has been going on about West Sydney being destroyed week in and week out. He doesn't know what destroyed means in football. Destroyed means scorelines like the following;

Nairne/Bremer 39.34 d Callington/United Eagles 6.7
Callington/United Eagles 4.5 wdb Kangarilla 43.22
Birdwood 44.29 d Callington/United Eagles 1.5

Now THAT is a basketcase! And that was a selection from 2012 - their last season. They folded before the 2013 season. They have copped even bigger hidings than these! THAT is the definition of not being competitive! As much as I rag on the West Sydney idea, they have been way more competitive than this! There have been others (Port Elliot in the 90's springs to mind), but CUE are the most recent.

So, enough of the "basketcase" stuff, KE! Get back to us when West Sydney start getting 40 goal hidings and not before.
