Sydney get the Swans each week, Perth get there team each week and Qld get a Queensland team each week. The only problem arises because the NRL doesnt enjoy the FTA coverage the AFL .

The AFL giving some clubs greater handouts than others means that, basically the team that suits them to win wins. What a competition

“Have a look at what welfare has done for Aboriginal Australia. It’s been fantastic hasn’t it?” McGuire said on Triple M radio.“This is what we’re getting with the AFL.

“If you’ve got clubs who think the only way they can prosper is to meekly put their hands out and maybe get a few crumbs off the table of the AFL, they’re never going to fight their way to the top.”

Kennett said the Magpies, Hawks and Geelong – the AFL’s three most recent premiers – had all been close to extinction within the past 15 years, but had fought their own way out with good business models.

“Unfortunately, for a number of years now, many of those businesses have not been run successfully enough to be sustainable, independent of the mother ship, which is the AFL,” he said of less successful rivals.

Kennett expected at least half the AFL’s clubs would receive special assistance next season.

“The chances of them rebounding financially in the next five years is very limited. So we do have an underlying issue. It’s a question of sustainability.”
What Jeff Kennet, an ex president of one AFL team says, and reality are two different things. He claims Collingwood and hawthorn were almost extinct 15 years ago.

What Jeff and Eddie were saying is that all clubs have financial challenges (including the NRL clubs where all but 2 clubs lose money despite handouts) but many have put in place correct business principles to overcome their issues without assistance from the AFL. They were having a go at clubs like north Melbourne who regularly put their hand out for assistance from the AFL instead of improving their business model.

This has nothing to do with teams folding or getting preferential treatment. #-o It has everything to do with all teams working towards becoming Independant of the AFL financially.

The NRL give the same grant equally - We don't have a doctored competition.

Isn't giving one more than the other the very deffinition of prefferential treatment :D

Any assistance the AFL give to clubs is based on their financial position and the circumstances they are facing. An example is
Port Adelaide who have a poor stadium deal and are bled dry of money by the SANFL who are essentially using them to fund their own league. The AFL closely examine their situation and assist as required to keep them out of trouble. Port Adelaide's situation will improve once they move to playing games at the Adelaide oval in a few years once it has been upgraded.

I'm not sure the AFL helping teams who need it is prefer retail treatment. Not all clubs have the financial position and supporter levels of Collingwood, WC etc... It certainly doesn't help teams perform any better on the field.

I think you are also forgetting that the storm receive significant handouts above any other NRL club.

Any handouts the Storm recieve came from there owners (News Limited). Any future funding have been negotiated , as part of the pay off for them to leave our game.

How's that for a conflict-of-interest

More ads risks viewer turn-off, says analyst
Michael Chammas
March 16, 2012

THE NRL must carefully consider the impact more stoppages during games would have on its viewers, according to media analyst Steve Allen.

As revealed in yesterday's Herald, the NRL has been working on a strategy during the past few months to allow for ad breaks at scrums and penalties, and has even considered adding a drinks break to ensure it gets the most out of the upcoming television rights deal.

While Allen, the managing director of media specialists Fusion Strategy, believes the plan to increase the number of breaks during matches to provide more advertising opportunities will maximise the television deal, he warned the future broadcasters of the sport faced a backlash from viewers if the code's governing body was to tinker with the structure of the game.

The NRL hopes to attract a television rights package worth close to the AFL's $1.25 billion deal. But the structure of AFL has historically made the sport more appealing to television networks, which have been able to take advantage of the breaks at each of the quarters, as well as after each goal, to screen commercials.
An AFL match typically lasts around an hour longer than a rugby league game, another factor that Allen believes will ensure the NRL falls short in their bid to attract a similar figure to the AFL.
''This is what's making it impossible, in our view, for the NRL to gain the same kind of bidding and price that the AFL got,'' he said. ''[Adding more stoppages] is their only way forward on this, if they do it properly. Any of the people bidding for the NRL, if they hadn't before, they'd be now thinking about how much more money they can put on the table if they could put more commercial air time into every game.''
