the national rubbish league tried to grow its own game in other states, WA and SA and to a lesser extent melbourne & yet still no one gives a crap about the game out side qld & nsw. the teams from WA and SA fell ass over & with all of storms sucess out news limited the storm would not exist. yet very few people give a crap about the storm the nrl is loosing ground in NSW and qld as well
so does that mean the national rubbish league is being swamped

NRL chief executive Dave Smith says rugby league can emerge from the drugs scandal as Australia's national sport because unlike the AFL, his code is "about tomorrow not yesterday".

Welshman Smith, who became an Australian citizen late last week, travelled to the Sunshine Coast on the weekend for a question and answer session with 200 of the game's volunteers.

He spoke eloquently of league's potential and repeatedly stated he envisioned the code becoming national.

Smith also lined up the NRL's major contender for a national footprint - the AFL.

"I want us to be the No.1 game in Australia. I think it is wholly achievable," Smith said at the Queensland Rugby League's annual conference.

"Look, I don't want to make too many comparisons to the AFL.

"I look at the things they (AFL) have done that are good and I think we can far exceed what they have done because we are about tomorrow not yesterday.

"With the athletes we have and the game we have ... the sky is the limit."

Even the NRLs own CEO can see the AFL is the number one sport in Australia.

So he thinks their "great" athletes will make them number one. Interesting. How will that work when NRL fans continue to stay away?

What a douche. The supporters, the people, make the game number one, not the players!

Steep decline

Sydney Swans, highest average crowd in NSW for 18 years, even last year despite reconstruction screwing them over.

The GWS Giants have more members than some nRL teams including the arse Raiders, also whom the Giants are just 1,600 off their Canberra home crowds. Just imagine when the Giants aren't shit and actually winning games.

The nRL's peak in Perth and Adelaide was the mid 1990's where each team had one year of okay crowds (nRL standard), but since then the decline has been so severe the nRL now almost completely ignores both cities because the interest just isn't there, nor will it ever be.

As for the Storm, well the nRL just better hope News don't pull out any time soon or they too will fall the way of the Perth Reds and Adelaide Rams.

The NRL needs rep games. Your regular season has few if any highlights. No blockbusters, no big crowds, no big games, no interest. No following outside 2 states.

The AFLs season has a massive game just about every week.

not a shred of interest

you have tried for 30 years to get Nthners interested
