AFL scouts raiding rugby league carnivals in Queensland

A NEW threat has emerged in the battle for the most prized junior rugby league players in Queensland: AFL clubs.

Essendon, Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions have begun exploiting a loop hole in their code's draft system by targeting the best athletes in the mid-teens from rival codes.

The last thing the struggling Brisbane Broncos need is more competition for young talent.

It is understood that before the recent under-18 state league carnival in Kingaroy, several player managers received calls out of the blue from AFL development officials insisting they would be able to offer better contracts for the best talent available.

One of those clubs interested in the carnival's talent was the Lions.

AFL clubs are heavily restricted in how they can develop and monitor the best Aussie rules talent and there are tight laws regarding contact between club and player before the national draft.

However, those rules only apply to registered Aussie rules players.

If a gun athlete is a league player then the likes of the Lions can sign him immediately and begin training him up in their academy.

Brisbane Broncos talent Joseph Forrester is set to switch to the AFL for next season with several clubs circling the rangy 20-year-old centre.

Velocity Sports is one of a handful of management companies linking league juniors to AFL clubs.

"We have been told by a few AFL clubs to pass on information and contact details of league athletes who may be suited to AFL,'' Velocity's Shaun Pyne said.

"They are targeting carnivals now which is a new step. They want the best athletes full stop and in Queensland that means targeting the carnivals.''

An AFL club scout who asked not to be named said the move was designed to flout draft rules.

The scout said in the future the best teenage AFL prospect may not be found in the draft.

"There's a lack of talent coming through the traditional AFL states and in Queensland league is the number one code with most of the best athletes,'' the scout said.

"They sign a 14-year-old league star who is long and athletic, let him keep playing league but also bring him into their academy for opposed sessions and training in Aussie rules.

"Essendon are doing it best at the moment through their James Hird Academy.

"This way they have kids signed without needing to worry about the draft.''

Ex-Gympie soccer star and now Collingwood player Lachlan Keeffe is so far the best example of the new system.

Keeffe is regarded as Collingwood national recruiting manager Derek Hine's greatest success story.

Spotted during a Queensland talent search, Keeffe had barely watched AFL or touched a Sherrin before joining Collingwood and he eventually debuted in 2011.

I was told by ARLD officials at the same carnival in Canberra that they ( VFL development officers & talent scouts ) are the first through the gate at Schoolboy RL nationals where ever they are played

they also regularly turn up to the rep games too in NSW & QLD as the article above says
they know our code is churning out some fine athletes ... some seriously talented youngins & as I said I spoke to one of the VFL development officers in Canberra during the U15 nationals played here in June last year
He said & I quote ... the NSWRL junior rep system is the best development program I've seen in any code ... & I've seen all the set ups in all the codes
that's what he said

they are learning off us .. not the other way around
as indicated

you've only got to look at how the VFL's latest expansion failures.. exposed its inadequate development programs
to have 5 of the 10 worst teams in professional sport in this country is a sad reality that this is indeed the case [-( [-( [-( [-( [-( [-(

it simply doesn't have enough talent at the VFL level for 18 teams
& the comp is a joke as a result   :_<> :_<> :(/ :(/ :(/

Oh and I see from the meat puppet's link that no one attended the carnival. They simply made some phone calls. And it won't get them anywhere because the player or players still have to come through the draft.

This needs to be pointed out.

I think long term readers know that I am an opponent of the formation of West Sydney, because the market isn't there. The low crowds at the Showgrounds compared to other clubs bear this out, although they aren't consistently low like they were for Fitzroy in their dying days.

NRLC is wrong about representative footy in New South Wales and Queensland, except in the Riverina and maybe in Sydney itself. It's not strong, and it's still developing after some stuttered starts and stops over the years. Of course it's a lot stronger than thugby development is in the football states (there at least NRLC has a point). But the missing key to it all is club development.

Raider trumpeted school competition. The AFL has moved away from that because they know that the bedrock of the game (any game, not just football) is in the community. Schools don't have the space to make that work, and it lessens the quality of the output - unless there is a specific program in place. Only private schools do that. Assumption College in Kilmore and many Melbourne schools (including Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College who of course have an indelible mark on the game's history) have a proud record. I have no doubt that there are private schools in Sydney that enjoy a similar tradition with thugby league. Typical heartland behaviour.

But I want to address the recruitment issue. It's something that Raider is complaining about (and AFLC as well I notice) as though it's the most heinous crime of all time. I sort of sympathise to a degree, because it doesn't help club development in those states. But at the same time it shows the very aggression that if thugby doesn't get off it rear ends and does something about - it's going to get wiped out. Now I for one would like to see it wiped out, but not like that. The NRL should stop dilly dallying around and start playing that game right back at the AFL. Where is their aggressive targetting of disgruntled footballers in those age groups in Victoria? Think about that one. Raider trumpets 17 players in one team? NRLC is right - that means nothing. The side should have had all 25 players coming from Melbourne, and have enough of an overflow to have a few more teams to set it up. Especially on the back of the Storm's success (salary cap breach or not). But they don't.

There's something else that the NRL clubs are doing wrong, especially in Sydney. Their local development. I keep reading about these local level clubs, but I never see them advertised. Metro footy in Melbourne gets more ink in the Age and the Herald Sun than this so called metro thugby league in Sydney does in the SMH or the Daily Telegraph. What, isn't the NRL proud to display this level? Does it even exist? Maybe it does, but boy is it under promoted within it's own heartland! I'm not going to NRLC's level and say it definitely doesn't exist but I would like to see some evidence of it.

The other thing is that the AFL clubs can't personally develop players like they used to. It's been that way since the draft was first introduced and it's why the old VFL Under 19 competition was abolished to make way for the TAC Cup. Neutral development. If it was done this way in Sydney it would improve quality and also provide better recruits. Just think what would happen if for the sake of argument that one under 18 squad was developed from the combination of Penrith, Parramatta and West Tigers, instead of leaving it as three. Think about that one as well.

Just on the OP though, I don't think it's West Sydney by itself. I think a general effort has been made across the board to back West Sydney up, and also to back up the formation of the NEAFL as a legitimate state level competition - in particular to the Hills Eagles and Sydney Uni alongside the reserves for the Swans and the Giants. It's great to see Auskick numbers up, but the trick is to retain them through the junior ranks. It's not easy, even in the football states - so it's even tougher when developing a new club in a hostile area.

But who knows? Maybe there will be a downward trend on junior thugby league numbers. Will they go to footy? Maybe. But they could also go to soccer. So it could well be heads you lose, tails you lose. It's a lottery no matter which way you go.

where would one begin with this spasticity :(/ :(/ :(/    :_<> :_<> :_<>

this for starters
Raider trumpets 17 players in one team? NRLC is right - that means nothing. The side should have had all 25 players coming from Melbourne, and have enough of an overflow to have a few more teams to set it up. Especially on the back of the Storm's success (salary cap breach or not). But they don't.

tell me you blithering fuckstick ?
if the Swines or midgets had a similar team competing against other sides from VFL heartland clubs at U18's level......... how many kids would they field from Sydney .... that's .... Sydney .....not the Riverina ... Sydney if they wanted to beat these heartland teams
I'll answer
next to none because theres not enough quality up there... infact theres very little as no one gives a fuck about the bumbling crap

for the Storm to make the U18's grand final fielding a team almost entirely made up with kids from Melbourne .. up against heartland heavy weights from Melb
is .. astounding
of course a cockhead with his fist up his arse like you would be too stupid to see it
but its generally regarded as one of the remarkable feats of recent times in RL development

even If your bumbling crap sport had a set up as good as the NSWRL Junior reps
it could not achieve a result like this one by the Storm ....

& this load of crap
There's something else that the NRL clubs are doing wrong, especially in Sydney. Their local development. I keep reading about these local level clubs, but I never see them advertised.   :(/ :(/ :(/ :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<>
they appear to be doin just fine .... afterall they develop the talent for the national schoolboys carnivals & NRL clubs junior rep squads that ...your codes development officers can't stay away from :(/ :(/ :(/    :_<> :_<> :_<>

face it dickhead
where development is concerned ... we do it better ... just ask your own talent scouts

Jesus where to start with this tripe.

Development.
Crapper claimed the Giants had better DEVELOPMENT,than Parramatta...He was shown to be about as wrong as any mongo can be.

He was wrong about plenty then you stick your head in to show how stupid you really are.

Wiped out by who..
You do realise that in QLD ,AFL is fourth out of the football codes,a long long way behind RL
AS for the rest of the tripe .
You have NFI about the Northern states & where AFL sits in the pecking order.

Go read the LAWSON report.(its not an AFL PROPAGANDA piece) .
From 2009 to 2012 playing numbers dropped 6% , actual playing numbers not AUSKIck.
Yet you think RL is dying.
You are fucking clueless.
Only ONE SPORT fails to sell out their stadium in QLD ..have a guess.
You are the perfect AFL fan, believing everything that comes out of AFL house..no matter how far from reality it is.

1. The Storm Under 18 flag is not a sign of strength. It is a sign of weakness of the heartland clubs.
2. Sydney metro thugby league is not doing well at all, otherwise it would be getting coverage equal to that of Melbourne metro footy.
3. The scouts aren't contacting thugby league rep squads for talent. They're contacting them to undermine thugby recruiting as I explained.
4. Any attempt to undermine the draft is always penalised, so The Telegraph has engaged in some VERY poor reporting.
5. Number of football clubs in Queensland over rules the crowd situation.

That's all I need to say. The AFL appreciates your promotion of our great sport, Raider and AFLC. Keep up the good work.
