AFL is surging into Sydney schools and Waverley College students have joined the wave of players keen to be part of the next generation of Sydney Swans.

Johnny Pawle, 12, will be part of the first team of Waverley students to play AFL in the blue and yellow guernsey as the college joins other independent schools in the Years 7 and 8 winter AFL competition next year.

Johnny already plays for Easts Bulldogs but is looking forward to representing his school in what he describes as "the best sport in the world".

"I play soccer in winter now, but AFL is the best sport," he said.

"We have a few good players already who will be in the team next year, so we should do pretty well.

"It's a fast-moving game, there's so much happening, so it will be good to be able to play AFL for school."

A right-footed centre-half forward, Johnny has already impressed local scouts and has been identified as a talented player and awarded a place in the Sydney Swans Academy.

Six independent schools will add AFL to their weekend winter sport program next year, including Waverley College, Trinity Grammar, Knox Grammar, Cranbrook, St Ignatius' College and St Pat's Strathfield.

Competitions will be run for Years 5/6 and Years 7/8 from May next year.

Cheers. Meanwhile no one will be taking up RL in AFL states.

More evidence AFL participation numbers are rising and RL numbers are stagnating or falling.

No, just like A leage and NBL the AFL are working towards a reasonable following in Sydney, GC and Brisbane. They have openly admitted they will never replace RL as the preferred sport of these cities. But with the Lions and Swans recording excellent membership and crowd numbers, as well as respectable TV ratings for expansion sports, theyre well on their way.

You may think its money pissed up against the wall. But compare now to when both the Bears and Swans started in their respective cities. Their initial followings were very modest. Now they are established clubs that compare well or better to most other clubs in their city. Yes its cost a heap, but well worth it in the end. =D>

AFL Darling Downs to expand by two teams

NEXT season shapes as the biggest yet for the AFL Darling Downs with a number of significant changes to the competition.

The senior league will expand to 11 teams after Chinchilla and South Burnett were formally accepted at the AFLDD annual general meeting on Sunday.

Female players will also be able to kick around with a women's competition given the green light.

Incoming president Andrew Foley said the logistics of the competitions were still under discussion but it was an exciting time for Aussie rules in the region.

"It's potentially going to be a longer season. We're waiting for feedback from clubs," he said.

"Some feel that every team should play each other twice but others are worried about starting too early. A lot of our teams play out of cricket grounds and they won't be available until after April.

"We've given the clubs until the end of January to go away with their recruitment. By then we'll have an idea of which clubs can field teams in which grades."

There will also be big changes at executive level with Foley to oversee both the senior and junior leagues for the first time.

Outgoing presidents Trevor Green and Graeme Carnahan will stay on as vice presidents for the separate leagues.

"We felt it was a better approach to merge the bodies and work together," Foley said.

"We're not a major football code here. We're just trying to make sure we grow steadily and give people the opportunity to play."

THE GWS Giants will field eight players from country NSW and ACT in 2013 with the club set to add two more bush babies to their list as the first graduates from their million-dollar academy.

The club will today promote 18-year-old NSW products Zac Williams, from Narrandera, and Joseph Redfern, from Wagga Wagga, drafting the pair through the 2012 AFL rookie draft in Melbourne.
