No Xman I like to keep analysis simple and valid. We must simply look at what would be considered successful by the AFL considering their aims and objectives in Western Sydney. Excuses can be made in umpteen manner of ways and that's all you're doing in your silly pithy comparisons above. Now answer the question. Would my estimate of 27 thou be a success? you'd consider that a success?

Lamo response there X. I suggest you read my suggested readings and review your statements re how much Khunt would improve in our other thread...and then give yourself an uppercut.

Now to get this thread back on track. Yes its the swannies v GWS in round 1 as Raider highlighted. Can any of our AFL supporters give us a crowd estimate? I mean the swannies are the premiers after all :D And GWS might have Tipsy, or Tuppence, or whatever his name was, instead of that RL star Izzy....

Even so my prediction is 27 thou if played at homebush. 29 thou if played at the SCG. Would you AFL supporters consider this a success? 8-[

I would say they get 35-40K again for the opening round. It could get less then that for sure but with the swans premiership and it being the opening round I expect it to at least get 35K. It got about 30k if I remember correctly in the middle of the season when most of the hype had warn off and the swans were looking ok but not world beaters at that stage. I also think that the crowd for this new traditional (you might be call it that in ten years) opening round clash will get stronger and stronger as the giants get better over the next 5 years.

27k would be a good result for what is, essentially, a one-sided slaughter. I predict the crowd will exceed 30k. The real unknown factor is the Swans' premiership, and what effect that will have. Last year's game was an event; the dual launching of the AFL season and a brand new club. The gloss is off this year, but with the Swans flag there's every chance the drop in crowds could be minimised. Time will tell.

And from the AFL's perspective in terms of their aims in Sydney, yes, having a bigger crowd than all but 3 nRL games in the city would be considered a success.

Thankyou drac. Finally a member who actually reads a post and answers the questions within it. Something our Xman seems mostly unable to do, such is his mental impairment.

Fair enough drac, but imo, 27k would be a worry for the AFL. A considerable drop in interest in the local derby. But perhaps, if GWS, can kick off, and that seems to me a massive IF, then perhaps there will be some good interest in the rivalry... time will tell.

It's not really a massive "IF" at all. It's more like a "when" because of the talent that list has. It's just a matter of time before their young guns start developing into stars, same with Gold Coast who many predict will have a break out year in 2013.

I predict the GC will go downhill. But I see your points with GWS. Sydney is a massive city which can hold the two codes comfortably. So yes I agree with your 'when'. Prob is the AFL is a dumb organisation which has made many many mistakes in this venture so the 'when' is gunna take a lot longer than they thought imo. A lot longer. I'm thinking 25 years +

By downhill do you mean the team the crowd or both? Do you mean short term long term or both?

Im hoping that the Suns can improve and be a contender on the field over the next few years. Hopefully this translates into crowds similar to their first year. With crowds averaging close to 18-20K the Suns should be financially viable if the reports on their stadium deal are correct. Long term I have no idea if the Suns will make it, however I expect the AFL at least to back them financially for the next 30 years on the GC. If things are not looking good then Tassy or WA would be a good option for a move.

For the next 30 years? That's a big call pies, full of assumption. 30 years is a long time. I think if after 10 the suns arent any better than they are now, there'll be serious calls for their heads.

The Swans didnt really get better after moving to Sydney until about 1995,1996 which was a bit over 10 years. I guess they might be moved like I said to WA or Tassy if they are really struggling.

1996 was the year they cracked the 20k barrier for the first time in 10 years and it's no coincidence that they were also successful that year. All it took was that one grand final for them to have a sustainable support base in Sydney, and that's probably what it will take for the Giants to have the same. No doubt they won't have the amount of Swans fans, but their numbers will increase significantly once they go deep into September. =D>

I've mentioned a few times that if the AFL had abandoned the Swans and Bears when the going was tough initially, it wouldn't be the biggest sporting comp in Australia today. The Suns and Giants have been stated as 20 year projects. The AFL's not going to walk away/relocate after 10 years, let alone 2. They know how hard it's going to be because they've been there before with the Swans and Bears. The two teams will have low points, and the Giants especially will post some awful crowds in the coming years while they're at the bottom of the ladder, but the AFL is taking the long term view. Short term pain for long term gain.

We've never lost an expansion team yet, and we're not about to start now.
