THE Greater Western Sydney Giants orange and charcoal army look set to outnumber Sydney Swans fans in the blockbuster opener on Saturday night.

More than 28,000 tickets for the clash had been sold as of Monday, and an ANZ Stadium spokesman said they were expecting more than 40,000 at the game.

Giants fans have taken up 56 per cent of tickets compared with 44 per cent of the Swans faithful. The Giants have more than 7500 members signed up, a third of whom are from western Sydney

an ANZ spokesmen eh .... who was that ?.. Andy Ididaphoo
so in 2 weeks they've sold less then 8000 tickets
& in less then a week they're expecting ova 12,000

VFL maths at play

my prediction of mid 30's looks like it will be spot on ... a disaster for the VFL
&
10 rnds of NRL in Sydney to beat that with some big games to come

sweet
Oh yes, disaster! how does 35-40k compare to many of the crowds the NRL has served up so far this year, even in beautiful weather. 11k anyone?

A disaster is the NRL in Melbourne which averages around 15k when the AFL in Melbourne averages around 40k.

A disaster is the NRL is Sydney which averages around 16k, and dips to 8k, when this game is expecting to get 35-40k!

Disaster yes, for the AFL, NO!

 Great banter folks. I must say I just dont know which way this one's gunna go. I can see Raider's point re this crowd is supposed to be a historic match but its really drawing a poor crowd and we all know when anz aint over 55-60k the atmosphere is miserable in there. Add to this the result will be clear midway into the second quarter and even the deluded AFL fans must agree its gunna be a pretty piss poor start for marngrook in sydney this year. That's without comparing apples with oranges of course and looking at nrl crowds which we all know are smaller because its a superb game to watch on the box.

But at the same time I think Raider's been too nice to beaussie on this one. I just cant see a league match in sydney beating 35k before rd 13 this season.

How quickly you forget the average Swans crowd is 25k!

Speaking of historic, the highest debut home and away game crowd for a new AFL club is around 44k, and that was for the crows in an AFL heartland city. If the Giants get near that in non heartland city this will be a great result.

Plus it will embarrass the hell out of the NRL and it's few fickle fans.

A superb game to watch on tv but only one of their FTA games makes the top 20 for the day!

How does sitting at home watching the box help your team financially or even show them they have your support? Oh yeah, TV rights.....oh snap!

The Giants will have one of the highest attended debuts in AFL history and this crowd will dwarf almost every NRL game this year. #-o

Yes RL is a superb game to watch on tv and that is why the ratings are higher for nrl than AFL each week. Yes tv rights help and the NRL is set for a booming deal, so 'snap' those $$$ Xman. By the way, what's with using the word 'snap' as a kind of exclamation point? Are you american Xman or do you stuff your mini brain with american sitcoms all week? Either way you sound pissweak.

NRL ratings are not higher! The two live and targeted FN games are but only when dodgy regionals are included. I wonder what would happen if they didn't show the Broncos every time?

The delayed FN game and Sunday game get spanked by the AFL every week. #-o

30k for last year champ. These games are usually against larger Melbourne teams too, which bolster the crowd by 5-10k. :D

That's cummulative, not weekly dopey. It's amazing how a longer season and including rep games gives ARL a higher cummulative figure (which is bs anyway) and then NRL fans say they have higher weekly ratings. #-o
