That's the funny thing though. The majority of the AFL teams in NSW and Qld are in a poor state on field. Their support will reflect this. Yet all we hear from NRL fans is how AFL is declining because the code is failing to expand. It's just rubbish. If all 4 sides were winning regularly and in the top 4 yet still struggling on tv and crowds I'd say fair enough. But the lions suns and giants could make up the bottom three this year. Of course their following will suffer accordingly. It would in AFL heartland as well.

the Swans have been consistent finalists
yet they're crowds 5 years ago were 36,000 ... they're now 26,000

they were watched by an average of 155K people on TV in 2006

122K in 2007

95K in 2008..... 8-[

in 2011... it was down to 55K average

:-k

while RL crowds may go up & down due to on field performnaces
the Swans cannot claim the same

they are & the sport they play are...... on the nose
& no amount of but but butting .... from their delusional & their sports delusional fans
will hide this.

Hmm, yet that doesn't seem to be factored in for the decrease in crowds for the Swans during the SCG redevelopment. Surprise, surprise, hypocrisy from RL supporters.
phhhhttt ............

theres been more then 30K seats at the SCG throughout all recent developments

So they made the GF in 2005/06, they scraped in to the finals the next 2 years, then were 12 in 2009 and lost many stars through retirement. They're on the way back up now and the crowds will follow, especially if the weather in Sydney this year improves. The better broadcasting of AFL in Sydney this year will also help.

Interesting view given they had a higher crowd average and membership number than any Sydney RL team.

The Socceroos maintained their flawless start to qualifying for the 2014 Brazil World Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win over Oman at ANZ Stadium on Tuesday night.

Goals to Brett Holman, Josh Kennedy and Mile Jedinak ensured Australia claimed maximum points from their first three qualifiers after wins over Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

Road To Brazil: World Cup Qualifiers

Bangkok: Holman sends Socceroos through + 53 Muscat: Socceroos suffer shock Oman loss + 43 Sydney: Flawless Socceroos down Oman + 42 Damman: Kennedy double sinks Saudi Arabia + 41 Brisbane: Socceroos edge out Thailand + 50
The result means the Socceroos are virtually assured progression to the final stage of qualifying in June next year, likely only needing as little as a point from their remaining three games in the group to ensure it.

While Oman had proved stiff opposition in three previous meetings, Australia always looked in control in front of 24,372 fans, despite lacking a cutting edge in front of goal for parts of the game.
24k.

What was the swans average again? And this is an international, not even A league which averages 12k.

Show me the total attendance for the socceroos last year in Sydney. Add that to the A league if you wish. Who wins?

no its a scenario ... that shows the state of popularity of the 2 games if push came to shove

you want to put up a socceroos game at the low end & say thats definitive proof
but how bout the other end of the scale

So if this scenario drew a crowd higher than home and away RL in Sydney, which it would easily, would it then be fair to say that NRL is soccers bitch in Sydney, excluding SOO and finals?

So that's a yes then? Soccer is a bigger sport than home and away NRL in Sydney. In fact the last international I saw in Sydney between Aus and NZ didn't draw many either.

Wow, RL in Sydney is pathetic. Even soccer is bigger than its national competition.

AFL in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth is number 1.

Just goes to show how poor the following for the NrL really is.
