AA eyeing up rugby league referees
Thursday, 18 October 2007 18:50
The GAA are considering turning to rugby league referees in an effort to rescue the International Rules series.
The GAA are now exploring the possibility of using neutral referees in an effort to re-instate the matches and have approached the Rugby Football League with the idea.
RFL match officials director Stuart Cummings, who was planning to visit the GAA as a part of a fact-finding mission, admits: 'It would be interesting.
'We will be willing to look at any proposals - but as yet, no discussions have taken place.'
GAA president Nickey Brennan met Australia Football League chief executive Andrew Demetriou in Paris today for exploratory talks on a re-instatement of the series.
This is likely because the AFL are interested in overseas expansion. The NRL are not despite being the strongest RL competition in the world.cos789 wrote:Small things amuse small minds.
Here's something that might amuse you.
A lot of the expansion in Australian Football overseas has come from the involvement of rugby clubs.
Hilarious isn't it . You, well your mates overseas helping us to become more powerful...........to squash you. =D>

As a South African living in South African I would just like to state that AFL will never catch on here. All we see when we watch AFL is a bunch of lanky men wearing tight shorts and vest making minimal contact (hardly something that is going to make us drop football or rugby) I tried to watch the AFL grand final last year to see what the hype was about and found myself falling asleep within the first quarter. This not a dig at the sport, but the fact is it, is an intrinsically Australian in its nature and appeals to Australians, it has history in Australia. South Africans just struggle to see the importance or even the enjoyment of it. Another aspect that should concern AFL’s expansion is that its name lends itself to be an Australian game. Australia is a sworn enemy of South African on the sporting fields, we are hardly about to take up a game with the name of Aussie rules

Steve, what would you know about South Africa?? Just because you are South African and live there doesn’t mean anything to Victorians. The AFL have decided that you are going to enjoy it steve, unless you are a white South African, because apparently they are targetting black South Africans!!! the guys that sit in front of their computers all day placing comments on the roar would argue Steve that you are wrong!!! Non of them have probably ever set foot in South Africa but on this site that counts for little, You see Steve, this is the biggest weakness to AFL expansion. AFL followers, esp from VIC, have been born into an environment where they eat, sleep and breath AFL and not to follow the game in an almost religious manner would mean you are “un-Australian”. Victorians cannot understand why anyone would not love, in fact adore the “Great Australian game”. They feel that if they take this “great game” to places like South Africa, the people will also fall in love with it because it is far superior in their eyes to anything you maybe playing. You see Steve, according to the AFL, if they can get into your poorest schools through volunteers and funding by giving out food aid, tee shirts, a ball and a faint hope of an Australian Visa, then the AFL can claim to have signed up 50, 000 South African kids and then make claims through the Victorian media that AFL is going great guns in your country Steve. In fact I believe an Australian Schoolboys U18 AFL team have just toured South Africa playing your best from these schools that recieve aid from the AFL. Are you loving it moreso now Steve??? (may i make the point here that anyone who travels to less fortunate parts of the world to give aid to people and offer them some hope is a truley amazing person, however the AFL is doing it to expand their game, the aid is the way in). The fact that you claim that “South Africans just struggle to see the importance or even enjoyment of it” means little or nothing to the brain washed here Steve, it just makes them more determined to try even harder. Maybe they will sign up a Springbok!!! Shame on you Steve for not realising that!!!!

Matt S,
One thing I’m always careful with is ackowledging that the AFL sits 4th on the international development table. I dont consider it right to bag RL’s 4 nations or World Cup given the code is way ahead on the international front.
In fact the AFL is 4th in Australian terms, but probably 5th in global terms given the NFL is much bigger with its international footprint.
Baby steps for Australian footy – a long way to go but the first genuine attempt to create an international pathway has been made- beggars beleif that it took this long.
cheers
