Has masculinity been all but stamped out in the AFL?

After watching the halftime match show last week, I think it was the melb syd match, and seeing some short piece on a player and his sucky lil pissweak French builldog pet I felt really disturbed. What's wrong with these players and how can some (or perhaps its actually most) of these guys seriously call themselves men??

I mean, this image doesn't do the port or is it freo players any favours in the manliness stakes does it?



Who came up with the idea of fluoro green budgie smugglers and why do these supposedly tough men/athletes appear similar in physique anorexic looking catwalk models?? And what on earth is the guy in the middle doing with his privates amongst his teammates while parading naked barr what resembles a fluoro green mankini??

Back on the dogs, I couldn't find an image or video of the player and his French bulldog pet ala paris Hilton and her lapdog, but I did find something else. An entire book of players posing with their dogs in what are mostly fairly disturbing and emasculated images The dog of choice appears to be either the soft and cuddly golden lab or some form of lapdog.

Yes there was and there still is. Such a foolish thread, King Eliagh, and it goes to demonstrate not for the first time how little you understand about Aussie Rules. Any contact sport like Aussie Rules or Rugby League contains an inherent level of masculinity and it always will.

One is a contact sport ..
The other is a Collision sport.

All depends what you class as masculine. I think it is very masculine for a man to help support his family, be a father to his child, to take responsibility for those things that occur in his life and step up when it counts. Any male can and should do that. I also think it is very masculine for a man to pursue his likes and interests regardless of those who still hold onto 1950s stereotypes of what it means to be a man. To say someone can't be masculine because he has a small dog is just stupid and creates pressure on what is and what isn't masculine. It is partly why suicide rates for men are so high and why the ratio of men in Gaol compared to woman is so out of proportion. It is why young men think it is cool to get into fights and why so many men are left dead or maimed from such fights.

Gender studies 101 aside I think we need to discuss the flimsiness of the frames in the photo, why the choice of dogs and the physical likeness to underage anorexic models. I mean...they do kinda look like that don't they!

In all seriousness I do take your points phelpsy. It's not really cool to apply traditional notions of manhood to contemporary society. BUT. It is worth discussing in regards to how these men should be and probably are perceived in the public eye. From the photos and dogs I think there's a large portion of AFL players who should be perceived as skinny hipster boys rather than strong tough men. What do others think? And why the stark contrast to 80s AFL players? Imo the rule changes in regards to biffo have really changed the nature of the men playing. Fair point?

No , you're off the point there phelpsy. Lemme help ya. I know that if you're quite skinny and weedy lookin, play a sport which is reducing rough physical contact at a rate of knots, own a lapdog, then you'd not be perceived as masculine phelpsy.

Now listen closely. Not all of us have done gender studies 101 like you and I. In fact the vast majority of contemporary society have not done gender studies 101 at all I'd say, so the perceptions of manlihood and masculinity would continue to be framed by the traditional lumberjack who owns a german shepherd or similar or the vast majority of rugby league players in the nrl. I'm afraid that's just how it is phelpsy, you can either admit it, or live in the tiny bubble of society who think manliness can be a skinny fluoro budgie smuggler wearing hipster with a French bulldog. Not saying there's anything wrong with that but common 'man'. Whether you pay the bills and support your family, if you wear those budgie smugglers and like cuddling up to lapdogs you've got to expected to be perceived as having less testosterone than the average man.
