I had a great discussion with a new resident of WA from the western suburbs of Sydney.
Always interesting to get their slant. He said he had to choose an AFL team or be a social outcast.
He chose the Dockers because their trophy cabinet reminded him of WTs. I was blown away
to find out that he had gone to the 2013 AFL GF which is difficult even if you want to go
for a West Australian. In his words he was impressed by the way the AFL was run in such a
business like manner and the extent of investment in grassroots. That was contrasted by the
nrl that was dominated by figures from the past and their lack of commitment for serious change.
With Balmain being a big anchor around the WTs I got the impression he had no desire
to return to the game he was brought up on.

it is only over the last few years the NRL has set up a commission similar to the AFL, as it use to be privately owned with News Ltd having a share in it. the advantage of having the commission set up is that alll of the money goes back in to the game where as under the private ownership they want the money back in their own hands.

i believe the commission was set up around 3 years ago, or around then. the game was in very bad shape before the commission so bad that they struggle to obtain a bank loan.

Negotiations between the NRL and banks to secure a loan to build new headquarters have stalled because of the code's 10-year history of near-zero cash balances.

NRL chief executive David Gallop refused to be drawn into commentary on the outcome of approaches his director of finance, Ed Farish, has made to banks, saying the site for a new administrative headquarters, combining the NRL, based at Fox Studios, and the ARL, located in the NSW Leagues Club in Phillip Street, had yet to be decided.

It is true that when the NRL was under the effective control of News Limited the game had problems.

However that restriction has been removed and the only way is up. It's good for competition.

SOO 1,2,& 3 the top 3 sport shows ratings wise..
