I love both NRL and AFL. Happy to watch any game from either code.

The bigget football code(out of the big four codes) in australia would have to be Football/soccer. it holds a significant position in almost all states and territiories in Australia. Below i have made a list for each state/territory with football codes poularity 1-4, and given 4 points for 1st and 1 point for 4th. then looking at the population for each centre the scores are multiplied by the states/territories population percentage against australias total. I think this is the most fair way because it is inaccurate to give equal significance to the most popular sport in NSW compared to say TAS when one state has a much larger percentage of the nations population than the other and therefore the most popular sport in NSW should higher points.

i have judged the popularity on general interest in each particular code, and actual participation and following. it has nothing to do with popularity of the AFL or NRL or A-league etc, its strickly code popularity.

Have no issue with this clearly participation wise soccer clear beats all - but I think there is other stats as well that should be included - memberships, total revenue, sponsorship, crowds and lastly TV ratings - when all are added I think soccer slips to 2nd or 3rd but agree in essence with the above.

Of course this assumes nrl is all rl. If you use the barrasi line for instance southern nsw would be AFL. Also gold coast would be second for AFL at worst third but clearly bigger than soccer. So I'm not sure state boundries are useful here.

barrasi line is the biggest load of crap (well one in a long line of shit) you AFL lot ever came up with, it's complete and utter rubbish.

Maybe it is maybe it isn't but my point is saying all nsw is rl is deceiving s Aussie rules bleeds across tge Murray. also AFL has a large presence in nsw and is played across the country at reasonable leveld so mypoint is state boundaries are not really usefull. Coukd you do those sums for the county as a whole?

its far too vague

participation fair enough ... but also general interest & following ... & yet it has nothing to do with the NRL or VFL
so
what are people following then ? :-k
still its a lot better then that twat Swines effort

here is another way to gauge which code is bigger overall is to put up the biggest offerings each code has had this year in each capital & its audience within said capital & see who has more in their non traditional areas

its obvious this translates into actual levels of interest

Sydney
1. RL SOO decider .... 1.2 million
2. Soccer WC qualifiers 434K
3. VFL GF 344K
4. Union Bledisloe 261K

Melb
1. VFL GF 1.3 Million
2.RL SOO decider 464K
3.Soccer WC qualifier 336K
4.Union Bledisloe 78K

Brisbane
1. RL SOO game I 904K
2. VFL GF 243K
3. Union Bledisloe 176K
4 Soccer WC qualifier 138K

Perth
1. VFL GF 503K
2. RL SOO decider 110K
3. Soccer WC qualifier 101K
4.Union Bledisloe 70K

Adelaide
1.VFL GF 348K
2.Soccer WC qualifier 109K
3. RL SOO decider 99K
4. Union Bledisloe 28K

so that's
RL in the 3 sthn capitals ... at 673K for its biggest event in 2013
&
VFL ... at 587K in Sydney & Brissie for its gala event of 2013

interestingly
RL's SOO decider drew a bigger audience then Soccer's biggest game since the 2010 WC in the Sthn capitals with the world cup qualifier that got us into brazil attracting only 546K in Melb , Perth & Adelaide

Also.... we're always told by fumbling halfwits in here & elsewhere .... that Union is the far bigger game of the 2 rugby codes in the Sthn states & yet
union could only muster an embarrassing 176K all up in the Sthn capitals for the opening Bledisloe of 2013     :(/ :(/ :(/ :(/
