The AFL's bold move into the heart of Sydney's west may have started to pay dividends for the sport if Auskick participation rates are anything to go by.
Australian Rules football's aggressive drive to attract Sydney children is bearing fruit with AFL NSW/ACT now boasting a higher Auskick participation rate than Victoria or any other state.
Boosted by a 27.26 per cent total rise in Sydney, AFL NSW/ACT had a total of 48,965 participants in the football code's national introductory program in 2012.
But the growth wasn't restricted to the AFL's new frontier in the rugby league heartland of western Sydney, where there was 43 per cent growth, with south Sydney more than doubling its number of Auskickers.
The figures include club, school and after-school care Auskick programs.
It's been suggested the latter two have hurt junior clubs, but AFL NSW/ACT chief Tom Harley disagrees.
"Like anyone, we have to have different pathway opportunities for people to be involved," Harley told AAP.
"We are working behind the scenes really aggressively on our competition structures and our transition points from school into club.
"But that can't be our sole participation pathway, because society's telling us that isn't necessarily the way to go."
Harley paid tribute to the addition of Greater Western Sydney to the AFL and the Swans' rise to the 2012 AFL premiership as factors in the uptake.
The addition of a second AFL side has been key to the Australian Football League's attempt to increase its presence in Sydney.
"I think the oldest Auskick graduates have only just turned 18, so it's quite an immature market," former Geelong captain Harley said.
"If you look at our total participation across the board (last year), 70 per cent of those were under the age of 11."
With the Swans near the top of the ladder once again, more growth is expected in 2013.
But Harley knows full well that, unlike rugby league or soccer, the sport could easily lose traction **** youngsters just as quickly as it's gained it.
"We need to work on new ways to retain those participants, while recruiting new ones and, as I've always said to our guys, we're in the sports field in Sydney and we've got to be respectful."
An increase of 27.26% - it's the stuff GiantsRD would have wet dreams over had it been RL - but alas it's AFL and the winner is Sydaneeee!!!!!!!!!
Wow just wow
(GiantsRD slowly rocking backwards and forwards in the feotal position sobbing "It's not fair, it's not fair - why won't anybody baweieve me!")

Not anymore. Now it's the sport Queenslanders want to belong to.
Participation in the state grew by 9 per cent between 2011 and 2012 and the AFL expects to have 155,000 participants in Queensland by the end of the year.

The only state with a higher participation rate is Victoria.
Of that 155,000, 93,000 students played the game [for six weeks or more], giving the game its highest school participation rate anywhere in the country.
More than 40,000 of the 135,000 female players nationwide are from Queensland, and 50 Queensland players are listed as AFL professionals.
Meanwhile in Burpengary, a $13 million AFL precinct is being built that, when finished, will have two fields, with room for one more, and could host pre-season games.
The Brisbane Lions are also considering basing their new training and administration centre in Nathan or Springwood.
AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said he was “really excited about what is happening in Queensland for our code”.
“By the end of the year, that [Queensland's] will be the second highest participation rate in Australia, higher than WA or South Australia,” he said.
“To see a facility like Burpengary is really pleasing.
“The Gold Coast Suns are on the up, and I think Brisbane have now shown the potential that they are a team on the rise.
"There is a lot to like about Queensland.”
However, it appears the code traditionally associated with the Sunshine State remains just ahead on the scoreboard.
Queensland Rugby League reported 170,027 active participants in 2012, including 60,099 men and 1752 women.
Just over 48,000 players were involved in regular school competitions, 26,356 participated in formal gala days and 35,477 played in the full five-week Back Yard League Program.
UPDATE: Football Federation Queensland have reported a total of 106,797 participants - 47,000 of those from school, 47,799 both boys and girls juniors and 3014 adult aged women.
Wow just wow

Without debating where Auskick stands in the overall scheme this is obviously good news.Rabbit wrote:Good old auskick numbers
There has been a continued percentage rise in participation in NSW and Qld.
There has been a good rise in community figures as evidenced by the South Sydney figures which is basically due to Maroubra.
There has been the continual rise of NSW and Qld at the junior and senior representitve level.
Nice try Cos.

Long term the more people involved the better. However aus kick numbers are easy to generate in big numbers with little effort.

Once again people, Auskick covers a broad spectrum of players and competitions.piesman2011 wrote:Long term the more people involved the better. However aus kick numbers are easy to generate in big numbers with little effort.
Auskick involvement does requires effort and obviously the logical place to start is at the younger end so you can progress through the ages.
With any sport there is a well defined parttern of junior dropoff so without a breakdown of figures you cannot make accurate assumptions.
But there is one assumption you can make and that is if the numbers are going up then there will be a flow-on benefit.
The article points to a dramatic rise in participation in South Sydney. It's no surprise that South Sydney is home to most rapidly expanding AFC around.
That's a community club. It's well documented the huge increase in AFL competitions most notably school competitions.
I cannot proportion what participants fit under which heading but I don't really care.
Nice try Cos.

Re: AFL PARTICIPATION RATES SURGE THANKS TO GWS!!!!!
It seems that Canberra is really embracing AF too
Australian rules football's aggressive drive to attract Sydney children is bearing fruit after AFL NSW/ACT boasted a higher Auskick participation rate than Victoria or any other state.
The GWS Giants' push into Canberra has also boosted the capital's participation following a 15 per cent rise in Auskick juniors.
The Giants went head-to-head with the NRL and the Raiders last month when both teams played in Canberra on the same day. The Giants won the battle of the turnstiles, attracting 1300 more fans to Manuka Oval.

The AFL's newest team is also having an impact on junior interest. Boosted by a 27 per cent rise in Sydney, AFL NSW/ACT had a total of 48,965 participants in the football code's national introductory program last year.
More than 1500 of those juniors are in Canberra and ACT manager Steve Mahar said the Giants' presence was attracting a new generation to the game.
Overall participation has also increased in the capital by 4.5 per cent to 15,683 players.
''Our junior teams have increased from 83 to 92 teams, we have structured the competitions differently … the clubs are being proactive in trying to grow,'' Mahar said.
''The Giants just gives [Canberra] a vehicle to grow the game. We haven't had that access and a constant presence in Canberra before.
''Everything we distribute has a Giants logo on it and it's the sexy stuff people want to be associated with.''
The growth wasn't restricted to the AFL's new frontier in the rugby league heartland of western Sydney, where there was 43 per cent growth - south Sydney has more than doubled its number of Auskickers.
The figures include club, school and after-school care Auskick programs. It's been suggested the latter two have hurt junior clubs, but AFL NSW/ACT chief Tom Harley disagrees.
''Like anyone, we have to have different pathway opportunities for people to be involved,'' he said.
He paid tribute to the addition of the Giants to the AFL and the Swans winning last year's premiership as factors in the uptake. The former Geelong captain noted hard work, price and the quality of the product were also key.

And I know your upset otherwise why would you need to bullshit! Come out of the closet GiantsRDRaiderdave wrote:2500 in VictoriaSwans4ever wrote:Yeah be happy with 1500 in Victoria and 3200 in WA playing RL - you can't show any evidence to support what you say - but AFL will continue to grow and grow and grow!Raiderdave wrote:this BS article was destroyed & shat on by Leaguies ...as it simply refuses to announce the number of club registered players for fumbles & bumbles in QLDSwans4ever wrote:It appears Queensland is also thriving

Aerial ping pong?
