Jubilant SBS paid back in millions

SBS blitzed the commercial networks and scored record ratings for the Socceroos match but it might have to dig deeper for broadcast rights beyond next year's World Cup.

SBS said yesterday that the Australia-Uruguay match delivered an average audience of 2.5 million viewers and a 36.4 per cent share of the prime time audience. Both figures are records for SBS and the sort of audience numbers Nine, Seven and Ten would crow about.

"It's a fabulous result," said Steve Allen, managing director of the media buying agency Fusion Strategy, confessing his prediction of an audience about half that size was "our worst forecast ever".

Having the Socceroos competing in next year's World Cup would be a huge boost, said SBS's managing director, Shaun Brown. "Forget everything you thought you knew about Australian sport. The 2006 FIFA World Cup is quite simply going to be absolutely huge."

SBS fought off strong competition from other networks, reportedly paying $10 million for the rights to all 64 World Cup matches. Mr Allen said Australians often lost interest in international sporting events when the national team dropped out, but notwithstanding that soccer was at a "different level than it has been for 10 years".

SBS also has the broadcast rights for the Socceroos international matches in the lead-up to the World Cup and is in talks with Football Federation Australia for the rights beyond then.

Mr Allen thought Australia's win on Wednesday would spark interest from other broadcasters for those rights, but SBS had a big advantage because it had the "track record of being the network of soccer".
Great result for SBS. Good to see the taxpayer funded network getting a huge boost in viewer numbers. Wonder how much they charged for advertising during the Socceroos historic qualifying match the other night. Oh and while I'm at it, congratulations to the Socceroos. Fantastic effort boys. =D> =D> =D>
