the sad fact is neither AFL or NRL are the number one code in australia as neither are truely national.

2 teams in each mainland state, games in every state or territory and every capital city for premiership points, I'd say the AFL is the most national league of them all by a long margin.

yeah but two of those states is no more than of a shoe string significance. In nsw AFL is easily sitting 4th out of the 4 biggest codes (RL,Union,Soccer,AFL) and i would say in QLD their 3rd

the Swans are easilt the biggest Club in NSW.
the National Rugby League comp, 2 states, plus a team who are world champions that no one cares about in Vic

to set teams up in Tassie & Nt is not financially viable just yet, unless they are going to be running things on a shoe string budget & living off hand outs.
the AFL at least run permanent fixtures down there as well as in Canberra, NT and North Cairns, it would be nice if they did more but, you are not going to get a true National comp, so the AFL i the most national comp we have

In Gold Coast clearly second . Maybe Brisbane equal second ... Rest of much if state would say second .

there would be alot more people on the Gold Coast that prefer union to AFL, soccer im not sure about, i think AFL might have an edge there, in Brisbane RL then Union then i would say soccer is just in front. its up in the north where AFL i would think sits in prob 2nd place behind league.

In sydney its RL then i would say a tie with union and soccer then AFL, in newcastle its league then soccer then union then AFL, in wollongong its league and soccer, in the south of NSW RL and AFL would be about even, up north of NSW its RL

Living here, I would say AFL definitely had a larger presence than union but yes, with the kiwis here and Done schools , union is probably followed by more ... But there is a large AFL contingent if supporters . And strong grass roots support as well.
