The Swans have been the highest drawing team in Sydney across all codes for 18 years in a row. If that's failure i'll have more failure for the Giants please.

The Storm meanwhile, despite all their success, haven't even been able to outdraw the Bulldogs or North. Can you imagine if a foreign sport that 'no one cares about' had the regular season attendance record in Melbourne as the Swans do in Sydney? How about the top SEVEN regular season attendances? Me either. Wouldn't happen in a trillion years.

I'll just leave this here:

72,393 Sydney v Collingwood
64,222 Sydney v Collingwood
63,369 Sydney v St Kilda
62,586 Sydney v West Coast
60,307 Sydney v Collingwood
59,266 Sydney v Collingwood
54,129 Sydney v Essendon
51,686 Canterbury V Souths

So what does constitute reasonable success for the AFL in Sydney. Crowds are over 20000 consistently for most games, membership at all time highs? One kpi would be increased media coverage of AFL in general , not just Sydney teams and scandals . That could be better. But certainly swans have carved a nice market for themselves , a bit like victory in Melbourne had done. If your into victory and soccer you see enough of it and crowds are good , and more coverage when they are performing ... However if you're not into soccer you see a bit in press here and there but you know it's around . Averages may be lower in 2012 to other years but I think averages do that from year to year ... I wonder how they compare to when the swans first started in Sydney ? That would show growth I think .. But yes , several years of growth or decline are good indicators but like most stats you have to consider context. Anyway my two bobs worth .

Raiderdave Swans membership at all time record 33k and could reach 37k, GWS 11+k and could go up to 13k which could be as high as 50k for the Syd market in a RL town! Not bad for no one caring! So if you still believe thats decline give us more! 350+fans attend rd 2, NRL got 122+k in rd 5 you really are smaking us! Swans got 20+k in Syd and 1/6th ur total all up we might as well just give up then. U are a muppet!

Its pretty obvious that the giants have taken the following of some Sydney AFL fans. Also consider that these blockbuster crowds depend on factors like the position of both teams on the ladder at the time. The years where they got massive crowds where when collingwood were rising and the Swans were still riding high from their glory years. They dipped in 2007-8 which would mean the games against collingwood didnt hold the same blockbuster status.

Its like saying the Bulldogs, eels or rabbitohs are losing following because they dont achieve the same crowds as previous blockbusters. Huge, outlier crowds, like the swans saw are more about the clash than the team.

success ?

plain n simple a wider acceptance by the broader sporting public which they have not achieved even 30 years on

apart from about 25K people who are members or regular attenders of games in the city
they have not been given as much as a raised eye brow by the rest ... most of the time & this is for a team thats gone pretty good for a long period of time now

I've said it before
if you can't even get a decent number of casual lounge lizzard interested enough to push a button on a remote to watch one of their games on tv
you have failed
the very vast majority of people in Sydney , do not on a daily basis discuss the swines at the water cooler at the office , or in the pub after work ..or in the play ground at school

this mob has been shoved down the throats of sydneysiders for 30 years
great coverage on tv
favourable positive press coverage , the media rarely write a bad thing about the swines
great on field

& the bill for this over the last 30 is huge
the VFL has invested a monster amount of coin to succeed in sydney

& yet
you can combine their at ground attendance & interest on tv , & still not come up with 100K sets of eyes
& even after they win the comp
they still only bank 100K in profits 8-[

this is
failure .... plain ... & simple

RD ... I think it depends on your definition of success. The measures you mention as success would see it having the same profile as NRL ... I don't think anyone expects the AFL to be on par or near par with NRL .. If this is your definition of success than I don't think the AFL or swans would ever succeed under that definition. If however of you deem success as having a committed core following (record membership this year), regular crowds over 20 000, and as you say favorable press coverage, then you could say the swans have been successful... Based on those definitions of success. An analogy would be Melbourne Victory.. I would class them as successful in Melbourne on same definition... How on your definition they would not be successful as not as popular or dominant (or near) as AFL.

You could however possibly class the wonders as successful on your definition based on their impact in western Sydney ... They seem to be on par with Nrl.... So it can happen but they had a good base to begin with . I don't think the AFL will ever be on par with nrl re: being embraced by city at same level ... But they definitely have a niche market if not better. Nearly 40000 are hanging over there hard earned after all to be members.
