Uploading the same image via the remote URL options seems to overcome these problems.

Uploading Avatars
Not exactly sure at this stage what the problem is but it seems when you try to upload an avatar from your hard drive, 9 times out of 10 you get a message saying the image is more than 6kb or words to that effect.
Uploading the same image via the remote URL options seems to overcome these problems.
