I was going to compare Penrith's inaugural crowd average with WSW's, but imagined Dave's inevitable, barely legible response and thought better of it:

But looking at Penrith's crowd averages raised an interesting notion. In 1967 Penrith averaged 7,505. In 2012 they had increased that average up to 10,858; a whopping increase of 3,353 over 45 years. That's a rate of 74 people per year. At this current rate, Penrith will reach an average of 20,000 fans in a mere 123 years.

While the above is very much tongue in cheek, I do have a genuine question for those in the know. As far as i'm aware Penrith is a large area, with a massive number of kids playing Rugby League. How have they failed to generate a large following over the past 45 years? Their biggest crowd average is just 17.7k in a premiership year.

Parramatta Eels, Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs and these days Wests Tigers were Penriths biggest problems for years, these days they need to play some winning footy.

The problem now for Wynn, Rebel and other major retailers is getting enough stock. The club ordered 10,000 of the red and black jerseys for their debut season and would have been happy to move half of them.

But try buying one in Sydney at the moment.

They are as popular as a Del Piero jersey.

Most stores are out of stock and waiting for new deliveries in January.

This A-League club is truly one of the most remarkable success stories in Australian sport. They didn't even become a footy club until April 4 this year when FFA made the announcement they would replace Clive Palmer's Gold Coast.

It wasn't until May 26 that coach Tony Popovic and CEO Lyall Gorman had their first day in the office.

Normally it takes years and years to build a successful football club in any code.

The AFL gave the Gold Coast Suns and the GWS Giants three years and $100 million to prepare for their debuts. The Wanderers got about three months and whatever spare cash was available at FFA for start-up costs. They are unique in modern sport - funded by the governing body, FFA, but in effect owned by the community of western Sydney.

No Russian billionaires, no Clive Palmers, but a fanatical bunch of fans who create atmosphere like nothing else in Australian sport.

FFA's new boss David Gallop was blown away by the crowd at Saturday night's Sydney derby.

He's seen some wonderful rivalries in rugby league over the years from Souths v Easts, Manly v Parramatta, Cronulla v Saints and so on.

"Personally I've not seen the SFS with the level of noise from Saturday night," Gallop said yesterday.

"A small minority behaved inappropriately but the atmosphere on the whole was on a level that is unique in Australian sport."

Rugby league might be already entrenched in Sydney's west and the AFL continues to throw millions behind the Giants.

"Sydney's west is a critical market for all the codes," Gallop said.

"It's quite extraordinary to think they only came into being earlier this year. There's a real sense that they belong in the competition and the opportunity for further growth is so exciting."

On Saturday night, it was Sydney FC who looked like the newcomers to the Australian A-League.

They were never a threat and played like the team that had been flung together in a few months.

The Wanderers performed like a team built on years of stability, inspired by the crazy support from The Bloc at the southern end of the stadium. They are now fourth on the ladder and better judges than me rate them a sneaky hope come finals time.

The Storm won an NRL premiership in 1999 beating the Dragons after entering the competition the previous year. Maybe the Wanderers can do something similar.

Great atmosphere Gallop is a good car salesmen but i have been in greater atmosphere at league games before, he (Gallop) is just trying to build something special with the Wanderers and i am all for it.
