wait so we get to add on the Toyota naming rights for the AFL too now right? gotta be apples with apples...thats more than 10 million per season according to the Heraldsun - in 2008 mind you, and that deal is ongoing., so we can tack on aother 50 million for the AFL right - and we should have done that for 2007-2011 as well just so we stay on the even keel here as it were.

However NO ONE is reporting over 100 million for NZ rights, it seems to be common knowledge that the NZ broadcaster doesnt want to pay more than it is already (14 million per year), and 100 million is the most optimistic guess Ive seen anywhere.

National Rugby League clubs should be able to become operationally profitable on the back of the bumper new broadcast rights deal for Australia’s top rugby league competition, according to the body that represents the clubs.

NRL Club Council spokesman David Trodden told the Australian newspaper that the new five-year deals brokered by the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) will transform the financial fortunes of its 16 member clubs. Fox Sports and Nine retained the domestic rights to the league in deals totalling A$205 million (US$215 million) per year from 2013-17 – more than double the existing deals totalling A$100 million per year.

“There was always a view in club land about the TV deal delivering long-term financial viability for the clubs and the game,” NRL Club Council spokesman David Trodden told the Australian newspaper. “I think that this deal will do that. Fifteen out of 16 clubs have been operating at a loss and I think that this provides an opportunity for 16 of the 16 clubs to be on a solid financial footing and not make losses any more. It’s a pivotal moment in the history of the game.”

The broadcast and new media rights in New Zealand and the new media rights in Australia are yet to be sold by the ARLC, and could generate a further A$175 million over five years, according to various reports. The current total of A$1.025 billion over five years falls short of the five-year broadcast deal struck by the NRL’s arch-rival, the Australian Football League. However, Nine chief executive David Gyngell said the NRL was worth more “pound for pound” than the A$1.25 billion deal for the country’s top Australian rules competition from 2012-15.

Gyngell, whose network made a losing bid for the AFL rights, told Reuters: “As a television executive, they (the NRL) have struck a better deal in total than the AFL. (NRL) is the best sporting code on TV. It has the best ratings. We’re in good shape to give the AFL a run for their money.”

That is 175 million (AUS I hope not NZ) for NZ TV/online rights + New media rights in Australia. So thats not 170 million for NZ alone.

Money is - at its most basic level - to buy things. To have a pile of money is not its own end. If you're not investing it in growth, it loses all meaning. I'm not talking about the future funds the nRL and AFL have, putting money aside for a rainy day is important. But to claim that the NRL is closing the gap because the AFL is choosing to invest their money in growing the league and the sport, while the nRL doesn't, is so ridiculous that it defies logic.

Its all a bit of smoke and mirrors trying to make their deal look bigger then it really is. But having said that it is still going to be the second biggest deal for Sports TV/media rights in Australia and only a little off the first placed rights.

Telstra were already paying the NRL 75M over 5 years for the naming rights. Now theyre paying 100M for naming and media rights. Thats 25M for media rights isnt it? =D>
