NSW Waratahs on verge of signing Israel Folau in $1 million deal to play Super Rugby
James Hooper Exclusive
The Sunday Telegraph
December 01, 201211:30PM

THE NSW Waratahs are on the verge of securing a $1 million coup after emerging as the dark horse to sign Israel Folau.

In the wake of the collapse of Folau's NRL return with Parramatta, rugby union is in position to pounce.

Waratahs chief executive Jason Allen was guarded about the prospect of any deal with Folau being done, but he confirmed that the Super 15 franchise had one spot vacant on the playing roster for next season.

"We're always interested in quality players and we do have a large portion of our roster off contract in 2014, so we're talking to a number of agents on a regular basis," Allen said.

For the Super 15 outfit and rugby union in Australia, Folau's signature should be seen as a major celebration and a huge money-spinning opportunity in terms of new memberships, crowd figures, television ratings and interest in the code.

But for the NRL it is an abject failure.

The NRL have simply stuck to their moral and ethical guns. Sure if we got him there was the opportunity to enjoy the gloating. But to sign a bloke who hasnt played for 2 years, who's lost 17 odd kilos, for the money a superstar deserves? That's consistent with what the AFL did and found out it was a failure.   Your simplistic views know no bounds Xman. Yeah the NRL lost out big time
Massive loss because they bragged about what a great signing he would be because of the negative impact on the AFL.

In a huge blow for rugby league and an embarrassment for the administration

Emo media articles is all you're going on here. The NRL simply stuck to their guns and know there's numerous other 'Folous' and better in every age group coming through... otherwise they wouldve got him. All this tripe about its an abject failure is simply emotional pieces ranting about something which isnt there. But you boys suck it up, it's been a while since you've had anything resembling oxygen on these boards, such has been the stranglehold the leaguies have had over yas

Folau is damaged goods thanks to the AFL, there's nothing truer. All this "huuuuuuuge blow for the NRL" - "abject failure" is nothing more than journos pitching their piece for the helen lovejoys/brainwashed merinos among the crowd. And dont they just suck it up!

THE NSW Waratahs are on the verge of securing a $1 million coup after emerging as the dark horse to sign Israel Folau. (Wow how stupid does the ARU have to be he is not worth 1 million in the state he is ATM)

In the wake of the collapse of Folau's NRL return with Parramatta, rugby union is in position to pounce.

Branded a money-hungry mercenary after rejecting a deal to join the Eels, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal that Folau's agent Isaac Moses has been in secret talks with the Waratahs and a deal could be announced by the middle of next week.

"Beyond that, our policy is that we don't make public comment about individual contracts."

For the Super 15 outfit and rugby union in Australia, Folau's signature should be seen as a major celebration and a huge money-spinning opportunity in terms of new memberships, crowd figures, television ratings and interest in the code.

But for the NRL it is an abject failure.

Parramatta coach Ricky Stuart spoke for the first time yesterday about Folau's decision to backflip on the deal.

Folau telephoned Stuart back in September to outline how miserable he was playing AFL with the GWS Giants and explain why he wanted to return to rugby league.

The former Queensland State of Origin and Test centre even went so far as to suggest his return to the NRL wasn't entirely driven by money, but a desire to play alongside his mates like Jarryd Hayne and Tim Mannah.

Stuart is now questioning Folau's ethics after the developments of the past 48 hours.

"I'd rather know today about the dishonorable characteristics of Israel than pay him all the money that we tried to secure over the past eight weeks, then find out about the way he operates," Stuart said.

"I know it's an easy throwaway line, but success is built on culture and our club is plus one in culture by not having Israel."

Power-brokers at NRL headquarters, headed by the interim chief executive Shane Mattiske and salary-cap auditor Ian Schubert, will be red-faced over the latest developments and Folau's potential move to Super rugby.

Folau arranged a meeting with Mattiske before he quit the AFL to signal his desire to return to league and a deal should have been stitched-up the day after he finished his GWS Giants commitments.

But the Eels deal was blocked by salary-cap auditor Schubert, who refused to allow Parramatta to register a contract for next season for anything less than $400,000.

Izzy who....

Genial giant emerges from Yasawa lagoon

MAKE no mistake about this: weighing in at 117 kilos and standing 190.5 centimetres, Taqele Naiyaravaro is the next big thing of the NRL - in sheer size and bulk, at the very least.

Hailing from tranquil Yasawa Island, a five-hour boat trip away from Fiji's main island, the place where the movie Blue Lagoon starring Brooke Shields was filmed in the late 1970s and a paradise where the water turns the colour of champagne when it laps the sand, Naiyaravaro is a prime example of the raw materials of power, pace, potential and promise that's being exported to NRL teams in Australasia each season.

Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter and his training staff were aware they had an opportunity to mould the 22-year-old, who stunned them all when he defeated international centre Chris Lawrence in a 30-metre sprint, then excelled in a series of agility tests. He has proven to be as strong as a bull in the gymnasium and on the paddock.

Potter, who did not want to build up the quietly spoken, ever-smiling Naiyaravaro before he was ready, said it was hard to avoid three points when the club's monster from the Blue Lagoon was raised.

Codes riding off RL coat tails? :-k

Is that why players are leaving to take on bigger contracts elsewhere?
