I think you will find, if you care to do a little research, that if it was simply a matter of money the NRL could have got quiet a bit more from C. 10.
umm no you won't find that if you do research lol. We all know that the nRL would take the highest bid no matter what.
Unlike the AFL which took less by demanding live coverage of Friday and Saturday night matches across the country on FTA (exc Perth because of time zone).

Exactly! Most NRL fans justify the shocking FTA coverage of latest tv rights deal by claiming they got top dollar. So is puddycat suggesting they could have got even more?

I think he is referring to the rumors that CH10 offered 800 million for 4 live exclusive FTA games + all of the online rights. He is then assuming that the rumor is true and that Fox would be willing to offere 500 million + for the last 4 games.
It was'nt presented as a rumour in the Herald. And there was no mention of any internet rights , just 4 games.
They deffinately could have got more. But this just isnt a pissing competition, they were thinking of the future, and what it might hold. They didnt want to be tied to News LTD's 'first and last rite' clause for the next 20 years. Outside companys would not have even bothered competing for the rights if News Ltd only had to match there offer to keep the right.
Unlike AFL, the ARLcommission cares about our game.

It is understood Channel Ten made a serious bid of $800 million for four games, all in prime time, nationally, on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights. This must have been a tempting offer, given Ten would be scheduling one more free-to-air game around Australia.
Presumably, any add-on by Fox Sports for the four games it would cover was less than $225million, otherwise it would have equalled the combined Nine/Fox Sports deal of $1.025 billion and been an attractive proposition because of superior national coverage

This says it all. If ch10 had every prime time slot why would fox pay much at all for 4 games outside prime time?

Why do the fumbleballers care which fucking channel the footy is on, they'll be watching their shower of shit anyway.
What you really are worried about though is the fact the NRL is 200 million behind the vFL already with NZ, Radio, Internet and naming rights still to come.
Then there's the other interesting bit, the ARLC finally caught back up to the vFL 17 years after the SL war, in that 17 years, all the big money went to one code instead of the two like it used too (NSWRL was the first to get 100 million TV contract).
The next TV rights deal will be the interesting one where News and 9 have no say what so ever in regards to RL in the region, how do you think the rights will go seeing as the jump the NRL just had must have made Vlad shit his best Sunday pants?
I know a few of you in here shit yourselves after running the game down none stop for years telling everyone who's listen that the nRL would be lucky to get 500 million.

no one anticipated the nRL would take cash over decent coverage and control of their schedule! Who would have thought they could be THAT stupid!

They currently pay about $600k(120k a match) for 5 matches - just 2 in prime times slots (Sat & Mon).
I think they could manage, at the very least 70k a match for the programs that have been there bread & Butter....That is, if they wanted to continue to be a concern as far as PTV goes.
Fox would'nt have a serious competitor as long as it had league locked away.

It's a good move from them to get more people to buy memberships to grow the game attendances, the less FTA games, the more likely people will go to their teams home game. I have no problem with 3 FTA games, the only problem I have is the second Friday night game which should have been on a Saturday night or maybe even Monday night.
But hey, 9 and the ARLC made the deal that says 3 FTA games minimum (with a fourth if new teams come in) it does not say there has to be two Friday night games, if 9 see's a pattern where the second game is being serverly damaged and losing them money, they have the option of moving it to a time they think will benefit them and in which would benefit the clubs playing.
It's not all doom and gloom, the games on FTA will now be shown nation wide, that's a good start.
They are guaranteed at least 3 FTA games a week.
On at least one of 9's TV stations (9-gem-go and one of the shopping channels) will have 1 program at day about RL on its channels.
Over $1 billion already with at least $200 million more to come, that's good.

That bit about the different 9 affiliates having RL programming is something RL has not seen in nearly 2 decades, you vFL fans call it contra, RL fans forgot what that was for a while.

Having only 3 FTA games with 1 being live hasn't helped memberships or crowds in the past, and will continue not to help them either. The nRL are doing clubs and fans who want to see their team play NO favours by introducing Sunday night matches and more Thursday night matches for increased television $. The nRL, further prostituting themselves to television
They had no money to put into the game over the last 17 years stewie, wake the fuck up about this one little thing, no money, no nothing.
Already since the ARLC has come in, the Titans have dropped season ticket prices down to more or less everyone elses prices because they can, last few years, the titans have been paying $300,000 per match at Skilled, 12 x 300,000 stewie, add another 300,000 or 600,000 $$$$$ if they made the finals, that's a lot of money stewie for a sport that had none. Know where the money came from to pay for all of this, the fans of the Titans and RL/Soccer/Union people in Qld that had to go to the stadiums to get their footy fix.
Crowds for some teams are down because of form stewie, three of the biggest Sydney clubs had shocking seasons and one in particular has been crap for a fair few now. Do you think this would effect crowd averages stewie?
Those Thursday night matches stewie, I think if you look, most if not all fall on some sort of Holiday, so why complain, at least you'll have something to watch on a Thursday night while you wait for the AFL eh? Stop whinging about a sport you don't have any time for, I don't whinge about the fact not every AFL game is on FTA TV, I think it has too many now, but I don't follow the sport, so let the people that do complain about not enough FTA coverage, I'm happy with what I've been watching over the last few years, it's better than what 9 used to give us after the SL war which was 1 hours highlights on a Sunday afternoon game and maybe a delayed game on a Friday night if they bothered.
