I agree with Pussy, at the moment the AFL competition is inconsistant. Give it 5 years and all of the teams that are inconsistant at the moment will be playing a lot better. I expect that everything including ratings are on the way up with more consistancy.

The NRL is consistent..... Consistently poor.

6 AFL games so far this week. 3 were decided before the end of the first quarter. 2 more were over by 3/4 quarter time.

If the AFL is sirius about shortening the length of there game they should just lop off the final quarter - it would be the humain thing to do.

So which games were decided by the end of the first quarter?

Hawthorn were in front by 4 goals, hardly a match winning lead.

Collingwood were in front by 3 goals.

Richmond were in front by 5. Goals and lost.

WC were in front by 6 goals. Top v bottom, hardly a surprising result.

Essendon were in front by 6 goals, well played bombers! :D

Sydney were in front by 2 goals.

Notice that the average audience this round, considering a number of top4 v bottom4 games, is still in the high 30k's.

GC were unlucky not to win the second quarter.
Certainly it wasn't over at half time.

The fact is AFL is a high scoring game which works both ways: it's easy to build a large lead and just as easy to lose it again. Just ask Richmond.

Either way, even with some one sided games scheduled in 5 different states for this round the AFL still just about tripled the NRL for attendance.

A good crowd at Subiaco despite the crowd knowing the inevitable was about to happen.
Yes, I know that's a little unfair because the Subiaco is about 20k down on capacity of a new stadium.
Good to see some people decked out in GC colours etc. Not bad for a new team.

you mean average crowds. This is what happens when you average about 36K and you introduce two new teams with ground capacity of only 25K. Add to this 6 (?) games in Tasmania (grounds of around 15K), grounds being rebuilt (Geelong and Sydney) and built (Adelaide and Perth) and other games in areas such as Canberra and Darwin. Wait 5 years until the SCG, Adelaide Oval and the new Perth ground are built and the average crowds will exceed 40K.

In 2010 the home and away crowd was on average about 90 less then 2008 and 2010 had a greater overall average. Since then two new teams have been introduced. Last year if you removed all the games that Gold Coast suns played in you would find that the crowd average was the highest it has ever been. At least thats what I found halfway though the year in 2011.

True. This will be the "bottom out" of AFL crowd averages. They will only go up from here.

One thing holding them back is Etihad. Many AFL sides have 50k members now but playing at Etihad, with their reserved access one seating, means many games just don't meet full potential.

I love the idiocy of NRL fans! They think that a decrease in average is instantly a bad thing. Imagine a small business with one shop that had a turnover of 1 million per year. If they expanded with another store that had a turnover of 500k their average would go down to 750k. For NRL fans this would be retraction!

Our competition is affected at this time of year, All the leading players out. Doesn't say alot for your code though, beatin on Friday night

I would calculate that Friday AFL won the ratings by about 50K. keep telling yourself that the NRL game (sic) won.
