NRL Round 1 vs AFL Round 1

Post by King-Eliagh »

Sheezus christ, it looks like a ripper. I just hope this season goes like last season, or if possible even better. I've already got tickets for the first up match between parra and brisbane. Should be a ripper with our new halfback, sandow coming in and lockyer now with the immortals, the eels should win.

The AFL season on the otherhand makes me feel a bit...meh. I'll still check the swans gws first game but the lopsided of it all last season was a real turnoff, which I'm sure our AFL fans in here will understand :)

Yes last season was certainly lopsided and made many FN games uninteresting IMO. This will definately get worse with GWS starting, and will take at least 5 seasons to even out once the high draft pick kids mature into the stars they look like becoming. If the AFL can maintain crowd levels and ratings during this establishing phase they will be well placed for many years to come.

However I am really looking forward to seeing how GWS goes in attendance in such a hostile market. I am a realist. If they get 15k I will be impressed.

I'm also really looking forward to the better live coverage this year! =D>

Let's compare the opening rounds in detail.

NRL
Newcastle v St George Illawarra ; May be close but only because it's in Newcastle
Parramatta v Brisbane Broncos ; Broncos by a mile
Canberra v Melbourne ; Storm by ten miles
Penrith v Canterbury ; Bulldogs by a mile
North Queensland v Gold Coast Titans ; Cowboys by five miles
New Zealand v Manly ; The first genuine close one of the round
West Tigers v Cronulla ; Tigers easy
South Sydney v Sydney Roosters ; Roosters by a mile and Bunnies will miss Inglis

AFL
GWS v Sydney Swans ; Probably an easy win to the Swans but who knows?
Richmond v Carlton ; Always close
Hawthorn v Collingwood ; The Magpies have trouble with the Hawks so this will be close as well
Melbourne v Brisbane Lions ; Two strugglers and this will be close too
Gold Coast Suns v Adelaide ; Another close one
Fremantle v Geelong ; Another close one and the Dockers are my dark horse this year
North Melbourne v Essendon ; First thumping of the round the Bombers way
Western Bulldogs v West Coast Eagles ; Probably an easy win to the Eagles
Port Adelaide v St Kilda ; Second thumping of the round the Saints way

So we have
Thumpings ; AFL 2 NRL 5
Wins ; AFL 2 NRL 1
Close ; AFL 5 NRL 2

Round 1 win to the AFL is my prediction.

I can honestly say that I have no idea about the NRLs round, but the AFL:
GWS v Sydney Swans ; Thumping, but interesting to see how the GWS and falou go
Richmond v Carlton ; Always interesting to see how the tigers go. Should be close.
Hawthorn v Collingwood ; A beauty. Buddies had his best preseason in years. First game for Buckley
Melbourne v Brisbane Lions ; Demons to keep maturing. How will Brisbane go with brown fit? Should be close.
Gold Coast Suns v Adelaide ; A close one on the GC
Fremantle v Geelong ; Another beauty and close
North Melbourne v Essendon ; Close, Bombers struggle against the Roos for some reason :?
Western Bulldogs v West Coast ; close. WB are good but WC are a decent side now
Port Adelaide v St Kilda not bad in Adelaide. they're usually hard to beat.

All in all a decent round bar the Sydney derby

Can't wait!

Well wie'll just have to see how it goes. I dont agree with the pair of you on several matches but clearly the pair of you dont agree with each other either. Parra to beat the broncos in a close one. nsw doesnt know how the broncos struggled last year without lockyer and how good this little sandow is.

Mate you got no chance. While Sandow is busy kicking field goals the Broncos will be scoring tries set up by Norman.

the NRL won't have one thumping ......... every game will be close , all inside 10 pt margins

meanwhile they'll be 6 blow outs in the AFL

You seriously think the Bunnies, the Raiders, the Eels or the Titans will be competitive against their opposition?? You're dreaming!

Is norman the tool who stood in for lockyer in the semis and did nothing?

Souths will hammer the Roosters even without Inglis ..so its clear you don;t know anything when suggesting " will they be competitive " :?
they're clear favourites in the betting you wombat

A Lockyerless Brisbane is vunerable to Parramatta ... certainly in Sydney in rnd 1
the Raiders will put in a very good showing against Melbourne ... I'm tipping an upset
as will the Titans against the Cowboys ...

Giants are an unknown entity and will look to impress.
Melbourne will struggle this year . Brisbane may even beat them.
Adelaide aren't as good as you think.
Eagles won't win by as much as you think. Bulldogs hate them.

You only got two thumpings right.

The Bunnies rely on Inglis, Without him they'll get destroyed.
The Broncos are always strong. They won't miss Lockyer.
I would expect you to try and put over the sponsorless Raiders, The Storm are favourites for the flag.
Titans will be in the fight for the wooden spoon. They're hopeless.

You know stuff all.

The swans I agree with
Melbourne aren't that good and Brisbane will be better
The crows away from home will not be that good
I actually think Essendon (my own team) will lose. Nth are about the same standard as essendon but always lift against us
WC ? You're kidding! The WBs are a decent side and will probably be favorites
StKilda will need to play well to win in Adelaide.

The funny thing is though, these supposed blow outs of 70 points are really only about double the score. Most of them would still be in question right up until 3/4 time, with the winning team running away in the last 1/4. How many games of RL are won by a team which doubles the other teams score or more?
