SHARKS coach Shane Flanagan has drafted AFL flag-winner Nick Davis onto his staff to resurrect Cronulla's kicking and catching game.

In a reverse twist to the relentless Aussie rules raids on rugby league stars and heartland, Davis will spend the season tutoring Cronulla's playmakers and custodians.

The 31-year-old was a goal-scoring hero during the Swans' run to premiership glory in 2005, then trialled as an NFL punter with the San Diego Chargers in 2009.

"We don't have a big budget for specialist coaching and I identified kicking as an area we really need to improve in 2012," Flanagan said.

"I thought our kicking let us down last year, because we were generally able to get from our tryline to the opposition's 20 and then couldn't convert.

Davis made ad-hoc appearances at Toyota Park at the behest of previous Sharks coach, Stuart Raper, while he was still playing for the Swans.

"But this is a more permanent role and I'll be with the team on a regular basis for the entire year," Davis said.

"Before, it was a bit patchy, being brought in for a week and then away for three. Or coming in as a reaction to a loss.

"This time, we've had some really good discussions and planning about how it will work and hopefully I can make a difference."

Davis held two pre-Christmas sessions with the Sharks brains trust: Todd Carney, Wade Graham, Jeff Robson, Chad Townsend, John Morris and Isaac de Gois.

"I just started with the fundamentals at Toyota Park with kicking technique," he said. "But when we get closer to the season we'll be doing a lot more game-related stuff with the outside backs and getting the whole team on the same page."

Real kicker? lol, that's one of the funniest things i've heard, Davis is probably the second best kick i've seen behind Daicos, he could kick off his opposite shin better than any RL player could kick on their prefered foot.

Southern Sharks become Southern Power

In a significant event for the Sutherland Australian Football Club, at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on Sunday 14th December last year attended by 19 current members as well as receiving Proxy votes from another 7, the decision was made to change the playing name of the club to the Southern Power effective 2009 in a unanimous decision.

Already this change has seen the Clubs most productive off-season in its 36 year existence with an enormous increase in local business support with over 10 times the sponsorship dollars received in total last year already locked in with still over 3 months till the first bounce of the season.
