Sydney will lose about $90,000 of their salary cap in 2007 after the AFL announced changes to concessions for the Swans and Brisbane yesterday. The league also unveiled its revamped tribunal system.

Brisbane and Sydney will lose the location allowance they receive under the salary cap after 2006. But the Swans will retain a cost-of-living allowance - likely to be 7per cent - to help overcome Sydney's higher living costs.

Swans chief executive Myles Baron-Hay was pleased that Sydney would retain that allowance.

"It's very important and encouraging that not only is the AFL supportive of our cost-of-living allowance but so are the other AFL clubs," Baron-Hay said.

"In regards to the location allowance, we understand the AFL's decision and anticipated it."

The location allowance gave the Swans an extra $300,000 a year to spend, but after a review in 2006 of the cost-of-living allowance, Sydney are expected to have only $90,000 less to pay players.

Brisbane, however, were less impressed. Lions chairman Graeme Downie said the loss of the location allowance would disadvantage both clubs. "Because of the large number of players from outside Queensland, we are two to three times more likely to lose players to the 'go-home' factor than most of the Victorian clubs," he said.

Ah well, I always knew the big Victorian clubs would get there way with the abolishing of the concessions for the northern clubs. Good to see the AFL let Sydney keep its cost-of-living alllowance though. Even Eddie McGuire, one of the biggest critics of concessions for the northern states - agrees with the cost-of-living allowance for Sydney (well for the time being at least).

Eddie McGuire has been leading this 'Bash Brisbane' campaign for the last 2 years because they were too successful and because they had humiliated his club in 2 successive Grand Final appearances.

Add to the list the CEO of Essendon:

Bowers pointed the finger at Essendon (which Brisbane beat in the 2001 grand final) and Collingwood (which Brisbane beat in 2002-2003) as the clubs that had led a campaign against the Lions' allowance.

"Let's call a spade a spade. The Essendon Football Club said you can't win three premierships and not lose a player - we have to change the rules. That's what their CEO (Peter Jackson) said in an AFL meeting. The rules have changed. We've been hobbled," Bowers said.

Ultimately, Bowers' claims are accurate. It just shows, though, that many clubs such as Collingwood and Essendon are still in denial for the reasons behind Brisbane's success. They think they have an advantage in the salary cap that results in the Lions winning 3 successive flags.

They have no appreciation as to why their success is there. They still don't get it and I predict both Collingwood and Essendon will not make the Finals next year.
