AFL has contributed more to stadium and facility development than the NRL, ARU, Cricket and Basketball combined - given the combined total contributed by the NRL to stadium development is zero. But sure, its the AFL that are the parasites.

Thats certainly an odd take given the long term contracts signed by the AFL when they contribute funding, not to mention AFL attendances. And doesnt paint the NRL in a particularly good light given they share stadiums with other sports and dont pay a cent towards those venues.

That's true sooks. But the NRL genuinely shares stadiums with other sports. Eg. Allianz stadium which is home to 1 (soon to be 2) RL clubs. The Waratahs and Wallabies and Sydney FC. Even a small ground like Leichhardt have RL, RU and soccer. North Sydney Oval and Henson park have RL, RU and AFL.

When the AFL gets their fangs into stadiums they want to own them and usually do. They will basically be gifted a brand new stadium courtesy of the Olympic games in Brisbane. Cricket will get it for a couple of weeks a year then its the AFL's. It's the same with the former cricket stadiums in Adelaide and Perth. The AFL 'partnered' with cricket to get the stadiums and then took 'em over.

They got their fangs into Accor in Homebush and basically stopped it from becoming a proper rectangular ground even though they virtually never play there. And of course Andrew Demetriou famously derailed Australia's Soccer World Cup bid by blocking the use of AFL grounds. He laughingly accused FIFA and the FFA of being disrespectful.

So yeah, the AFL will trumpet 'partnerships', put in a token amount of cash and then take over. The NRL will genuinely share stadiums with other sports.

AFL venues in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne also tend to host major tourism based events such as Wallabies tests, Origins and Soccer matches. The MCG hosts more events than any stadium north of the murray.

They also paid several million to modify the ground slightly to fit an three AFL games a season on there until 2016. The AFL for years also had a bank guarantee on behalf of Stadium Australia. And it could have been much worse in any case, Mike Fitzpatrick (then AFL Chairman) literally owned Stadium Australia for a while.

And of course Andrew Demetriou famously derailed Australia's Soccer World Cup bid by blocking the use of AFL grounds. He laughingly accused FIFA and the FFA of being disrespectful.

Because they were. The FFA were literally at one point suggesting the Federal Government compulsorily acquire Docklands to use it. The MCG - a Victorian Government owned body, stood by its AFL contract, as it was perfectly entitled to do.

The NRL dont have a choice. They dont own or build any of their venues. Adelaide Oval is literally operated by Cricket for half the year. The Scorchers and test cricket were a big part of Optus Stadium, and the AFL is only allowed to use the MCG for half the year, the stadium is literally operated by a Cricket Club.
