What the NRL's $5bn TV deal is really worth

If you read the headlines, this is all great: a 75% increase on the previous arrangement.

That sense of perspective, however, wants a word.

$700m in 2026 is about $550-600m in 2021 dollars, and the previous deal was done at around $400m a year, so it’s more like 50% higher based solely on inflation.

It’s also a seven-year deal this time, so it’ll be a lot less in real terms come the back end based on signing a longer contract – in fact, probably the same as the last year of the current deal should inflation track as the Reserve Bank of Australia would like it to.

It’s also split across a larger competition.

It’s a 17-team comp now, and will become 18 with the Bears next year, then 19 with the PNG Chiefs, and eventually 20 by the end of the contract.

You can break things down but the deal is the deal - the product is the product - whether it is 10 or 20 teams? Is what it is.

Just to clarify … 5.3 billion is only for the Australian NRL tv rights.
NZ will add to that in the hundreds of millions

A 20th is built into the deal
The NRL is looking at close to 820mill to 850mill approx a year by 2029
Around 120% increase

and we still have PNG and Telstra Digital and radio rights to go!! WOW!

sources say Channel 7 struggled to fund a big-money bid for State of Origin as Channel 9 successfully fought tooth-and-nail to retain the ORIGIN showpiece.

Amazon were keen players and made a serious bid for Friday Night Football.

Channel 10 did not place a bid.

National Rugby League (NRL) & NZ Warriors: As part of a massive seven-year, the New Zealand TV rights component is valued at roughly AU$50 million per year and 20th team by 29/30 deal goes up (IF 2nd NZ team is the 20th team)

Summary

NRL to RUGBY UNION in NZ is only 30million less and with 2nd team that gap will decrease.
