Foxtel Targets $4 Billion Exclusive NRL Deal to Block Nine Network over 5 years and is actively pursuing partnerships with Seven or Ten networks

Foxtel has pitched a $4 billion proposal to secure exclusive control of all National Rugby League (NRL) broadcast rights from 2028, aiming to freeze out Nine Entertainment.
The $4B figure often quoted is misleading. It comes from PVL wanting to match the AFL's last deal that was worth $4.5B. But that was over 7 years and worth $643M per year. The NRL is doing a 5 year deal. To equal the AFL the deal needs to be $3.2B over that period.

The NRL's current deal is believed to be between $400M - $430M per year. They need a 55% increase to equal the AFL. With the current interest I'd say that is pretty much assured. If they got $4B it would be $800M per year and dwarf the AFL's deal. I can't see it getting that high. But then again PVL has been underestimated all his life. If he get's $800M per year it will be the deal of the century.

yep true, it looks solid for NRL to go 5 years. it if beats AFL with a 5 year that is

though with PVL he may stretch it out just to nudge AFL

I can see NRL hitting close to $750mill approx
especially with the way inflation has went
and so much extra content the NRL has added to the package

Be good if PVL was discussing with NZ at same time and international
so they could announce a total figure at the press conference.

it is always all over the place staggered..

AUS, NZ PACIFIC/PNG and UK
RADIO, DIGITAL, TELSTRA
all at the same time.

with no byes equalling more games

PVL stated front runners are NZ2 and QLD5

A great article in The Guradian:" Peter V'Landy's plays Kingmaker of Australian TV with NRL broadcast deal." Everything is pointing toward a record broadcast deal that will leave the fumbling game in their wake.

Yu oud think with two nations bidding for the rights it would make the nrl package more valuable as a product i would think. Be interesting to see if the nrl gets more for Australian TV rights than the AFL do. Especially with origin, the women’s nrl taking off- especially soo, and the expansion into a new untapped market on Perth.

But then AFL will just get more when their turn comes up I would think also. Be good if they both were up for grabs in same year.

The AFL's deal goes for 7 years. The numbers look good for the first few years but by year 5, 6 and 7 its value won't be so great. The way PVL is going with negotiations the NRL will go past the AFL in both TV deal and total revenue. Which will be incredible considering the advantage the AFL has in game length and number of stoppages for advertising opportunities.

firstly AFL deal finishes 2031 (7 year deal)

NRL's deal will go to 2032 (5 year deal)

1 year longer

they are practically finishing at the same time and should be measured the same..
AFL just signed a longer deal and done it 3 years earlier, in a better tv market.

under last tv deal, NRL did not have WNRL and team 18 and team 19 and ratings almost doubling..

it will be a very interesting next few weeks, where it will be all over and decided.

also NRL rights are split between AUS and NZ Currently they are only discussing the Australian rights.
the NRL have never announced and combined the two countries tv deals as one.

they went for a longer tv deal as the networks would pay more $$$$ to have guarantee on a product for longer.
this also helped AFL achieve a bigger tv deal.
either way the AFL got a terrific tv deal overall.. even if the NRL beat them by some margin.

NRL has so much against them in TV possibilities like you stated. Its very good outcome incoming :thumbleft:

LATEST NRL TV RIGHTS UPDATE

• Foxtel has proposed a multibillion-dollar seven-year deal that would see it acquire the NRL rights before splitting free-to-air coverage across multiple broadcasters.

• Foxtel has tabled a 7-year, $4 billion+ proposal for the NRL’s next broadcast deal, running through to 2034.

• Under the proposal, Foxtel/Kayo would purchase the rights in full before sublicensing free-to-air games to Seven and Network 10.

• Proposed split:

Seven: Sunday games, Monday games and State of Origin.
Network 10: Thursday and Friday night matches.
Foxtel/Kayo: Streaming rights plus exclusive Saturday matches. (As is now)

• The deal would achieve Peter V’landys’ long-stated goal of securing a $4 billion rights agreement.

• Sources claim Foxtel’s offer is worth more than Nine’s previous bid, which was reportedly valued between $550m-$600m per year over five years.

• Nine had previously explored buying all NRL rights itself to boost Stan and potentially remove Foxtel from the game for the first time in 30 years.

• Foxtel believes it can structure the deal within Australia’s anti-siphoning laws by sublicensing marquee content to free-to-air broadcasters.

• Some legal experts have questioned whether such an arrangement aligns with the intent of anti-siphoning legislation.

• Amazon remains in the race after previously bidding for two exclusive matches per round for Prime Video, though exclusivity demands reportedly stalled talks with Foxtel.

• The NRL views a split-broadcast model as a way to increase reach and exposure, particularly as it pushes into expansion markets like Perth.

• Concerns remain that having matches spread across multiple broadcasters could create confusion for fans.

• Seven’s AFL commitments limit where NRL content can be scheduled, which is why Sunday, Monday and Origin are viewed as the most likely allocation.

• The NRL had hoped to finalise a new broadcast deal before CEO Andrew Abdo departs for Tennis Australia on July 1.
