Giants and Swans to return to Accor Stadium in 2027

Post by Beaussie »

Caro reported tonight on The Agenda Setters that Engie Stadium (Sydney Showground) will be unavailable for the Giants for the first six weeks of next season.

With that in mind, the AFL and the Giants have again asked the Swans about playing one or two Giants home games at the SCG, however the Swans have again refused, and have the SCG exclusive contract in place.

Caro then went on to say not having the Giants in Sydney for the first six weeks of next season would be a disaster for the AFL and the Giants who have now enquired about getting Accor Stadium (Olympic Stadium in Homebush) prepared for the return of AFL footy. The last game there was in early 2022. Total cost is estimated to be a million dollars. Not entirely sure why it would cost that much to push the seats out, but yeah apparently that is what it costs to reconfigure the stadium to be ready for next year. Again not sure why, the reconfiguration process seems pretty straightforward and can be done overnight as seen in this video.

Watch this space, it appears the Giants will be playing at Accor and likely vs the Swans and another big club. Caro also intimated the Swans could be getting an SCG redevelopment too, but was very vague on this point.

Certainly no love lost between the Giants and Swans is my takeaway. Big news for footy in Sydney though.

Geez those Ginats administrators must be genius'. Move a Greater Western Sydney team away from greater western Sydney to a ground in the inner west where they get crowds of 3 or 4 thousand tops. Then the joint gets shut down for the first 6 weeks of the season. Dead set gold medal dills I'd say.

And playing at Accor is gonna look good. 3k in a 82k capacity stadium. Just send the mess back out to Blacktown in the real west of Sydney or close the whole catastrophe down. Simple. Done.

With South Sydney in the NRL recently signing a deal to move games away from Accor Stadium, to return to the eastern suburbs of Sydney in Moore Park, perhaps an opportunity has now opened for Venues NSW and the AFL to sign a mutually beneficial deal, that sees the return of blockbuster AFL games at the former Olympic stadium.

Playing games at Accor Stadium makes a lot sense and if promoted well, would attract a bigger crowd than Engie Stadium’s current capacity. Also better to be in Sydney than Canberra.

The Ginats don't draw crowds anywhere pal. And if the Swans want to play out there they can have it. The whole area is a shithole.

Don’t think the Swans are keen, but it will ultimately be an AFL decision with the fixture of Giants games during the problematic Easter Show period. Would work a lot better with buy in from the Swans who have over 75,000 members. Some kind of cheap ticket for Swans members or better yet a membership inclusion of the Giants Sydney derby match access at Accor Stadium.

That Ginats stadium deal would have to be the worst in Australian sport. They pissed off anyone in western Sydney who mighta given 'em a go by moving to Homebush. Then they lose control of the ground for weeks on end every single year.

Then they piss off to Canberra 270km away and play there. There wouldn't be a place more removed from what western Sydney is and represents than Canberra. Brain dead. Under the current setting this mob is doomed.

i am surprised GWS have not thought of this every season..

a game or two at Showground before Easter Show
and over the 6 weeks of no use.

2 blockbusters at Olympic
GWS v Swans
GWS v Pies

I’m thinking you’ve never actually been to Blacktown to truly understand how inadequate the ground is for professional sport. There is no corporate or media facilities and very few undercover seats in a tiny grandstand.

It’s basically one big hill around the ground with no shelter for crowds. Also no where near public transport, despite have a train line close by. It’s ok I guess for AFLW, pre season games and local Sydney football league games, but not much else. Engie Stadium is a much better stadium, however the Easter Show continues to present headaches for the Giants - hence the Accor Stadium discussion.

I think what you’ve suggested may be what the AFL and Giants are now thinking. 2 blockbusters vs Swans and Pies during the Easter Show period.

Tonight, Caro again reported on The Agenda Setters the $1 million figure required to reconfigure Accor Stadium. I’m still astonished it would cost that much to push the seats out for oval configuration. Perhaps I missing something here? Leeroy, Wookie, perhaps you know more? Does that $1 million figure sound right? Haven’t seen anyone from the AFL or the Giants confirming Caro’s reporting.
