Western Sydney Giants name change

Post by Beaussie »

Bout bloody time the AFL and club acknowledged Western Sydney. The GWS or Giants alone names are ridiculous . And fancy having no mention of Western Sydney on the club gear and merchandise, but Canberra is written on the back of the guernsey. :hmm:

Image

GREATER Western Sydney chair Tim Reed says the Giants are aiming to defy gravity like perennial challengers Geelong, saying he is certain his club will become a "powerhouse".

BRANDING CHANGE UP?

Is Greater Western Sydney's name here to stay?

The club has previously considered whether it should be solely known as the Giants or a different name due to a lack of recognition of the 'Greater Western Sydney' area.

Reed said changing or shortening their official name was something that would again be on their radar, but that their best branding asset will be on the field.

"It's something that we might contemplate in time," he said.

"The most important part of a brand is what it stands for. And whether we're known as the Giants, whether we're known as GWS, whatever the word is, I think the most important thing is what it represents and that's the brand of footy we play. It's the club that we are. It's how we embrace our members and really create a spirit of something that is bigger and greater than the individual parts.

"No one who you ask who lives in Sydney says 'I live in Greater Western Sydney'. It's not a term that people naturally identify with, so it brings no benefit to the club in terms of a brand.

"But equally the more important thing to me is that we're known for playing exciting footy. We're the team other fans like to watch if they're going to watch a second game on the weekend because they know that fast moving tsunami that we bring. That's more important to me than what the acronym is."

A name change ain't gonna save this almighty mess of a joint. I mean what would they call 'em?? They're supposed to represent western Sydney but they train and play in Homebush and Canberra.

Canberra is 300km away and Homebush is in the inner west and has virtually no cultural connection to the suburbs of western Sydney. The joint is cooked. They need to close 'em down or move 'em permanently to Blacktown and call 'em the Blacktown Ginats. But that probably won't work either as the GPS educated whitey white boyo's that play for 'em would riot at the prospect of travelling out there every day.

Just close the mess down!!!!!!!!

Yes- just call them West Sydney can refer to them in the nrl vernacular as Wests - (is AFL if would be just West) - would be a good first move.

As for Canberra - we could have some fun with that - Yhs Canberra Rouges (?). The Canberra commutes

I hope the silly suggestions coming out of Melbourne are ignored. Eddie McGuire for instance suggested the NSW Giants. Others have suggested GIANTS that the club has unofficially been using since 2018. :puke:

Too many are overthinking this. Just drop Greater and be simply known as Western Sydney.

Embrace Western Sydney for crying out loud and let Canberra have their own club with Team 20. This constant misguided desire to be everyone’s team in NSW/ACT has just created the ongoing perception in Western Sydney that the AFL and the club are not serious, or committed to Western Sydney. How do you get buy in from the people of Western Sydney with an attitude like that?

The ugly Giants moniker has to go.
The Giant name is a giant mistake that is the product of lazy incompetent marketing, no research.
The new name needs to reflect something about the area, a local bird, animal ect that will resonate and be embraced by locals.
The Giant name is cold, detached and meaningless and fails to reflect anything about the region they represent.
For comparison the ACT Brumbies name is gold, it reflects something local, an animal in the area. The name is marketing and merchandising gold, embraced and loved by the fans.

If the Brumbies and Giants are struggling they need to share administration costs, perhaps GWS could licence the Brumbie moniker.
Personally I am a bit of a Giants fan but no way would I buy any merch with an ugly giant on it.
Bring back the Bears.

Good to see the AFL come out and commit fully to Western Sydney. Interestingly, the AFL has final say with any potential name change. Games in Canberra with no mention of Western Sydney on the club kit surely goes to the point that the connection with new fans in Western Sydney has not been ‘good enough’

Snippets below from the new AFL Chairman in the Sydney Morning Herald article today:

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/AFL/new-or ... 5zvao.html

Issue: The AFL was “150 per cent committed” to GWS remaining in Sydney, but the connection to new fans in western Sydney had not been good enough.

“I think the footy program has been good. I think the corporate and commercial piece has been very good. I think the consumer engagement has not been great, and I’ve just been completely frank. So we’ve got work to do. And let me be unequivocal ... we’re 100, we’re 150 per cent committed to the Giants in Sydney.”

Drummond said he had not seen a proposal yet on the nature of any name change to the Giants, whose chairman Tim Reed floated a potential name change. He said the league would want to see evidence and data on a new name. “Show us the data, show us the facts, and we’ll then make a call.”

Issue: The lack of participation in the game from some multicultural communities, the Indian and Chinese diasporas in particular, was a big issue.

Drummond called western Sydney “the canary in the coal mine” for the AFL because one in two people there were born overseas. “One in three people in this country were not born here, and we do not connect with them,” he said. “50 per cent of Australia is going to be in that ‘not born in Australia [category]’ in 20 years’ time. And so our game will be under downward pressure if we don’t [engage].”

Hahaha!!!!! The AFL supports the Ginats in Sydney 150%!! That's like backing the Titanic lolololol¬!!!!!!! The mess is a monumental disaster. You just know this article is a hot mess of nothing when they go on to talk about 'international expansion' lololololololol!!!! FFS delusional BS.

I sincerely hope fumblehouse sticks with the ginats though. Its worth it for the laughs alone.
