Battle of the Gold Coast

Post by Fred »

Will be an interesting day today with both Suns and Titans playing on the Gold Coast. Whether is miserable - cold and raining so same conditions and almost same time.

Whilst I’m sure there will be ifs, buts, maybes - I think in the wash up both teams come about even re: pros and cons - although I’m sure it won’t stop the excuses.

I’ll list a few but think they balance out.

Titans not doing well and lowly placed on ladder - Suns going well and third on ladder however Gold Coast is Rugby League heartland. (As I have said previously - Gold Coast is rl heartland but feel many here follow other rl teams and don’t see titans as a second team unlike with AFL supporters here and the suns).

I also think a positive is that titans are playing Storm - with many Victorians living on GC - I know I had wanted to go to see the Storm up here (as easy to get to ground) - so that’s a plus - but here’s the kicker - I wanted to go see the stars (Slater, Cronk etc.) but they would put the game in during SoO - and I wasn’t paying good coin to see a virtual seconds side - it has always baffled me, with so many Victorians on the Gold Coasy, why the fixture the game during origin? So swings and round abouts I guess.

Con - Freo are a low drawing team - particularly on the GC that is do far to travel to for their supporter base as it is. The plus is more locals should turn up due to suns doing well… maybe.

At the end of the day- I think we should take the crowd numbers as they are - I think they will be similar. I know the suns aren’t expecting a hugh crowd so will see how it goes. All a bit of fun - and plenty of room for both sides. Would love to see a double header one day with the two sides - would be great for the Gold Coast overall.

As a side note - I want be going today as off for a solo trip to Java and Bali.

I think this is where we differ - some support no doubt but most people I know support another team - plenty of kiwis going for warriors and people from nsw or other parts of qld who have their own team and now live here - but also people who had a team before Titan come along.

They have enough support to fill the stadium easily. (they just need to Win which they dont)
all teams crowds nose dive when losing>> put a 18 year Losing years and you get Losses

on the Coast they are most certainly alot of peoples 2nd teams including me..

People who live on the Gold Coast who are followers of the NRL or AFL would have a sweet spot for the local team

From the highlights footage, definitely bigger crowd at the Sun's match.

Allowing for NRL crowd fudging the Sun's win.
I think the Sun's win this weekend is an amazing effort considered Freo draw very small away crowds.
Bring back the Bears.

suddenly crowds matter

given the 2k difference and QLD is apparently League rules and no one is interested in AFL 2 difference is a great effort
