Battleground states Expansion
Now the approved VP Stadium is going ahead in Brisbane ready for 2032
the AFL drawing on the 19th Team coming out of Tasmania 2028 (a 20th team is needed)
I have a feeling AFL is And looking at targeting the Booming Brisbane City and booming Burbs
with population and infrastructure explosion
Which would give them a derby (a real derby) and 2 teams in each major city outside of Melbourne.
(the NRL are fully aware of the potential the Brisbane markets holds for the codes.
PVL stating he wants 5 teams in QLD

Re: Battle for Expansion (Brisbane)
Possible ?? I think you have port and crowd rivalary and west coast and freo - so a Brisbane v another Brisbane team could have some impact - but I think the gc v Brisbane covers it given the already established. Rivalary between the two towns.

TV shows theres little support in QLD for fumbleball past the 35K odd who attend wions games at the gabba
Im not sure they'll rush to 20 either , like the NRL who are now saying 20 teams isn't in their immediate plans & 19 teams with a bye each week is not a bad thing
we will have Perth & PNG to be at 19 til at least 2032
They will stay at 19 with the 2 heads from 2028 for a while too.
When we eventually go to 20, it will be NZ2

yeah correct, I see no 20th to 2032 3 teams in 5 years is too quick.

Re: Battle for Expansion (Brisbane)
I see a 2nd Brisbane Team for AFL better than how GWS played out for Sydney..
the new stadium is the game changer, the GABBA i would say NO. but VP ... 50/50

as i said , they'll take a leaf from the NRL
theres no rush to 20 teams when there are ZERO viable options

Most AFL fans dislike the byes, 19 teams will of course mean there will be a bye every week which will turn off more fans.azif wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 7:13 pmthats hardly a ringing endorsementleeroy*NRL* wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 3:42 pmI see a 2nd Brisbane Team for AFL better than how GWS played out for Sydney..

I think they will go to 20 teams fairly quickly after tassy comes in.
20 teams and a split round in the middle of the season.
Likely candidates? In order of probability, another WA side, Canberra, NT in some form (with federal govt backing like whats happening with the NRL PNG side), Qld and then another NSW team,
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.

Several viable options, and no WA did not do that…the AFL could put another side in Perth or Adelaide and either or both would be successful.azif wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 8:28 pmdidn't WA tell AFL house to fuck off ?Quolls2019 wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 8:13 pmMost AFL fans dislike the byes, 19 teams will of course mean there will be a bye every week which will turn off more fans.azif wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 7:13 pm

And another NSW side is a possibility….but unless it’s a “new” market a 3rd side in WA is probable.

That was then, the new WAFL chairman is not so dead set against it…and a private consortium is willing to pay for it.azif wrote: Mon Mar 31, 2025 8:19 amhttps://www.foxsports.com.au/AFL/have-t ... 2cb041e9e2Quolls2019 wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 10:23 pmSeveral viable options, and no WA did not do that…the AFL could put another side in Perth or Adelaide and either or both would be successful.azif wrote: Sun Mar 30, 2025 8:28 pm

I am not saying they will, but it is a definite possibility.
Same article says NT the next…..but you say no….so the article is both wrong and right?

&
please , please AFL
choose NT
it'd be like the NRL choosing Mt Isa for their 20th team

Re: Battle for Expansion (Brisbane)
I think SA and WA are easy options if they choose to go there - but don’t see any upside apart from being easy.
NT - or a Northern Australia concept not a fan of - small fan base, spread out. Don’t like it at all. They schedule games there to have a presence - not as a prelude.
Brisbane - there could be something taking in west Brisbane (encompassing toward ipswitch) that has a decent grassroots support - although lions setting up their base out that way ? Plus Aussie rules is already going sufficiently well I feel - build on what they have - but down the track definetely.
Canberra is the obvious place a new team should be but have gws there kind of takes that out. A new team and gws out of Canberra would be a win win for both but can’t see gws moving.
Fir mins - the obvious choice is Newcastle. Yes, RL is dominant but that’s the point - to grow the game in new areas. There is a strong Aussie rules culture in the region and a long history. It’s not too far from Sydney and being a regional town, if they start winning, locals jump on board quick - similar to Perth with a new NRL team. That, to me, seems plainly obvious.
Discuss.
