excellent news re PNG & where they will play when they enter the NRL in 2028
At the larger 25K seat Sir Hubert Murray Stadium , rather then the smaller 15K seat Santos Stadium where the kummuls have played for quite a while now
It will be full for every home game too.

https://news.pngfacts.com/2025/02/png-n ... ed-at.html
excellent news and alot better choice of stadium. right near the Port Moresby Harbour
Stadium will be done over 2 stages completion before Round 1 2028 (if all goes well)
i was hoping for 30k stadium, but lets wait and see if potentially could be lifted down the track.

i like with extra parking and Hotel next to stadium

Port Moresby is going through a transformation ( watch this city) in 10, 15 years from now.

Looks like team 20 won't happen in the next media rights cycle (2028-2031) as was previously floated
& the NRL will be at 19 teams , 9 games a week for an extended period.
Perth is still on track to be playing as the 18th team & PNG the 19th team already confirmed. ..
But with no team 20 , the NRL can not go to a conference system just yet & the plans to reduce the season by 2 actual games for player welfare is also not possible.

My personal view is this is just PVL putting pressure on NZ to present a very strong financial case for a 2nd team , similar to WA's.
And I have no doubt they will , & we will be at 20 teams in 2032

currently the 8 game a week comp is at 204 H&A games ... each team gets 3 byes over 27 weeks
this will go to 9 games a week , 228 games , 3 byes per team over 27 weeks from 2028
we could be at 216 games when Perth enters in 2027.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'Landys has revealed the NRL's grand plan for a 20-team competition may not be in its immediate future.

The NRL have long had intentions of making it a 20-team competition following the successful addition of the Dolphins ahead of the 2023 season.
2025 will be the third year with a bye, and it's believed that is something the NRL are keen to remove, however, as it stands, the NRL may wind up a 19-team competition sooner rather than later, with the bye to remain.
The NRL have already confirmed a Papua New Guinea team will enter the competition in 2028 on the back of confirmed Federal Government funding, and a Perth team is rumoured to be also in the mix to join the NRL, potentially as early as 2027.
A New Zealand-based team - potentially based on the south island of the country - has also since been floated as a potential 20th team to close the bye and bring the competition to where the NRL would like it long-term.

But the bye isn't the issue for V'Landys. Speaking to News Corp, he admitted a 20th team is simply not in the immediate plans of the competition right now despite past commentary on expansion.
“The 20th team is not in our immediate plans,” V'landys told the publication.
“As I've said all at all times, the business case has to stack up and at this stage, the business case doesn't stack up (for a 20-team NRL).
“Nineteen teams is possible because we believe the business case stands up, but we won't do anything without going back to our (existing) clubs (for consultation).
“We've just had the annual general meeting (last week) and they (the 17 clubs) are an important stakeholder and they are players in this.
“When we determine what we believe is a strong business case (for 20 teams), we will then provide that business case to the clubs, players and state authorities to show why we are doing it.
“But at this stage, that business case (for 20 teams) has not been established.”
There are multiple bids on the table in New Zealand, but with potentially all of them set to be cast by the wayside, it will be up to the potential franchise chiefs to make the business case to the NRL.
The Perth-based team is also not yet over the line following recent funding complications, however, the NRL and Western Australian state government are still in conversation around how that bid would move forward and bring itself into the NRL.
Whether a Perth team enters the competition or not, the NRL will have its ninth game per week in the next TV deal following the addition of the Papua New Guinea-based team, which will allow for the competition to make a business case for an increased rights deal.
TV rights in the NRL are expected to be keenly contested at the next round of negotiations, with the NRL and ARLC also now looking at the possibility of breaking off State of Origin from the main contract.

Similar to the anti AFL media agenda in Sydney with Channel 9/Sydney Morning Herald and News Ltd Daily Telegraph.

Anyways, are the WA Bears in the NRL dead without WA government taxpayer $$$ handouts? Can’t the apparent number 1 code in Australia fund their own expansion agenda? What exactly are the NRL offering and contributing for WA?

yeah agree Sydney Media do favour NRL and PVL 100% but gee wiz do they punish them also..

No bears will not be dead, the NRL is simply asking for good facilities and stadium uplift for NRL entry.

PVL just stated today, Cook and PVL had discussions few weeks before Election, they would down tools
and recommence discussions once the election results had settled into April.
so all that media beatup the pass 6 weeks is false.

the BEARS will return to the NRL (its just a matter of when 2027 or 2028)
Expect decision before Easter Weekend.

you do realize. this FRED>>

that Sydney gets AFL ratings of 10k to 15k for AFL matches. (which are in primetime) And have Home Teams in the comp
which most certainly helps

Perth gets low figures (with no teams in the comp)
Introduce a Team and things change.

SOO ratings in Perth are around 130k on average.
3 game series is 400k

That is more than Lions will get for 11 games on FTA in Brisbane

Can you list Sydney ratings for last year combining fta and Fox - would be interesting

SoO always rates - give you that - it’s a marquee event - just as grand finals rate. Need to focus on home and away - week in week out.

Finally - don’t direct to me - I didn’t say it - the premier did.
