A new government - a new stadium??

With the new government in qld comes the promise to review the shambles that has been the Olympic planning and infrastructure - namely - the new stadium as recommended in the independent review. I think the Miles” government were, understandably, going with a comprised populist approach - give. He was fighting for his political life - makes sense. But now we have a new government with 4 years (?) up their sleeve - will they go with the obvious logical proposal - and replace the Gabba (which has an end date in the next 10 to 12 years anyway) with the new proposed stadium in Victoria park lands area? And in the meantime tap into the Fed government funding to help pay for it? Of course that’s the logical thing to do - give. It will have to be done anyway - but 1. Governments are hardly logical and 2. Is it too late ?

4 billion ( at todays costs) it'll be 5 billion in 5 years time .... for one stadium of moderate size , for an event that lasts 16 days & then used by a minor sport , the fumbles & bumbles .... & cricket a handful of times a year ?


this liberal guy didn't say much during the election , make any bold statements because he knew the plan labor came up with is pretty much it & all QLD could afford anyway. You can't increase the size of the gabba with an upgrade , & 35K isn't big enough for athletics.
I think knock QE2 down completely & build a 1.5 billion 50K seat venue for the track & field , some more on transport improvements.
the other 1.5 billion goes to Suncorp which can be upgraded easily for the opening & closing ceremonies & the soccer & rugby 7's. Increasing its capacity to 65K

& it saves billions on some of the garbage ideas being thrown up

The Gabba's end of life is something like 2034 or something like that. It isn't even up to current building code - and falls down in back of house in so many ways. It is also in a bad location according to the independent report (as too Suncorp) making logistics of concerts very difficult and off putting for touring artists and their management (Tayloe Swift was used as an example I think) - and that was the reason the victoria Park site was chosen - due to the easy access to semi-=trailers - in and out - very easily. Also public transport would be much easier. An access to the QEII is a nightmare as it is - and will cost a fortune to adapt the transport infrastructure to get out there - it is just a bad location and still no costings on this - QEII will not be holding the athletics. There will be a new stadium that will be funded in part by federal gov funding for olympics - given they have to do it anyway - why not throw it in the package ? It makes sense Freddy.

Don't believe the hype & misinformation , it won't take much to get the present site up to scratch code wise.The site is what it is , its been there for 130 years & thats where it will stay.
The SCG is not in an Ideal location either , Accor .... Suncorp , Hell Commbank isn't either .... means nothing.

They're not building a 5 billion dollar stadium at Victoria park ,
QE2 s location is no more or less ideal & a cheap , purpose built stadium ,for the olympics mainly but the cricket & wions can move there after if the Gabba is going to disappear down a sink hole or something ... will be fine.
The Broncos played at QE2 for 10 years & got their biggest crowds there , so this nonsense about its location is just that .... nonsense.

No one is talking about redoing the Gabba completely as it would be way too expensive & borderline impossible anyway , only upgrading it & an upgrade would not increase the capacity past 35K making it not suitable for the Olympics & still costing 2.7 Billion.

I believe the Gabba to bring it up to standard without rebuild is 500 million - which will likely blow out - and will not negate the issues that make it unviable - such as disable access, ambulance access to name but too, Basically, back of house it old, falling down, and needs replacing - the ground itself I like to be honest - from a supporters view anyway - but just hear that it is way past use by date back of house. So even if they put some lipstick on it - the fact is QLD are stilling going to have to stump up for a rebuild or a new stadium in the very near future - I think there is consensus on that amongst all parties from what I read - olympics or no olympics.

AFL may be the second to RL but it is still a major sport in Brisbane bya long way - draws in lots of tourists, people to the city etc. Then you have the cricket with the Gabba in its current state being placed futher and further down the list due to the state it is in. And very importantly, a new stadium brings in touring artists - with Brisbane often missing out.

Anyway - we will see. This is just my read on what comes out in the media - and who knows what will happen really. I would be confident that the QSAC place will not be used as it is currently intended re: olympics.

Eh no rush on the Gabba then is there , if its not going to be used on the Olympics ( it aint ) then it can wait til waayyy after .....

The state government has oscillated for years over whether to pursue a $2.7bn upgrade of Brisbane’s iconic Gabba Stadium in inner-city Woolloongabba or build an entirely new stadium at Victoria Park at an estimated cost of $3.4bn as part of the city’s Olympics legacy.

The federal and Queensland governments have agreed to a $7.1bn “funding envelope” for the Games.

Earlier in the year, former Brisbane mayor Graham Quirk led a review of infrastructure for the Games and ultimately recommended a new stadium at Victoria Park to replace an “end of life” Gabba.

Swimming Australia chief executive Rob Woodhouse also appeared before the committee and reiterated his call for a new national aquatic centre at Victoria Park.

He said consultants had assessed “multiple sites” across Brisbane and selected Victoria Park as the best location.
