Former heavyweight champion and convicted rapist Mike Tyson has signed on to train full time with Australian great Jeff Fenech and could try to relaunch his career Down Under, Fenech said today.

Speaking on Channel Nine television from Los Angeles, Fenech said the 38-year-old Tyson asked him to help revive his boxing career after the two trained together for five days on the US West Coast.

"I'm a great friend of Mike Tyson, and it will be a pleasure to try to get him back on track," said Fenech, once considered one of the world's toughest boxers, who retired in 1996 after a career that saw him win titles in three weight divisions.

Fenech said he wanted to bring Tyson to Australia in hope of reinventing his battered public image and his professional career.

"I think that would be the best thing for him just to get away from everything here in America," he said.

"Mike's a changed man, he wants to do the right thing," he said.

"I think it will be great for Australian boxing, it will be great for Australia, for people to meet him... I'd love for Australia to see the real Mike Tyson. The real Mike Tyson is a gentleman."

Asked if Tyson could hold his next fight in Australia, Fenech said he was already working on it.

"I've made some phone calls, I'm gonna try to come up with some numbers with some people in Australa and see what we can do," he said.

Fenech worked briefly as assistant to Tyson's coach Freddie Roache before Tyson's last fight, a humiliating, four-round loss to England's Danny Williams in July.
Am I alone in thinking Tyson is well past his prime? Good match him and that fuckwit Fenech.

 "Tyson is a real gentlemen"

Yeah right! He's fukking crazy, always has been except for his short period of devastating boxing and training with the late Cus Da'mato. That guy has been the only one who has ever been able to keep the guy focussed. By 13 tyson had 40 criminal charges against him, he was always going down the shitter. As for over the hill yes beaussie he is well over the hill, I give him no chance of getting anywhere from here on in.

And about fenech what happened with the attempted murders? I thought someone was out to kill him? He took off to america for a couple of months and I've heard nothing else about it? Anyway they belong together, both thugs, both criminals, and both idiots.

Visa worries should keep Tyson out of Australia
March 3, 2005

Heavyweight champion and convicted rapist Mike Tyson has virtually no chance of being allowed into Australia to relaunch his waning boxing career.

Acting immigration minister Peter McGauran gave a strong indication Tyson, 38, would have little hope of meeting the character requirements necessary to be granted an Australian visa.

Mr McGauran said the immigration department had a video tape of an interview Tyson gave in 2003 when he denounced Desiree Washington - whom he was convicted of raping - and said he wanted to rape her and her mother.

Tyson described Washington as: "just a lying, reptilian, monstrous young lady".

"Now I really do want to rape her and her f---ing mama," he said.

Mr McGauran said the fact Tyson, who served three years in jail for the 1991 rape of the former beauty queen, said he wanted to rape someone raised concerns about the protection and safety of Australians if he was allowed into the country.

Another of Tyson's notorious incidents, when he bit off Evander Holyfield's ear in a title bout in 1997, would do him no favours when it came to applying for a visa, he said.

"That Holyfield incident was 1997 but only 18 months ago he claimed on national television, we've got the tape, (saying) that he was innocent of the rape of that Desiree Washington back in 1992 for which he served three years," Mr McGauran told Southern Cross radio.

"But he now wished he'd raped both her and her mother.

"Now that's got to go to the protection and safety of the Australian community."

Tyson has signed on to train full time with Australian boxing great Jeff Fenech, who wants to bring the former champion to Australia in the hope of reinventing his battered public image and his professional career.

Fenech said he was already working on a fight for Tyson in Australia.

But the American would not be allowed into Australia without a visa and Mr McGauran said even if Fenech sponsored Tyson, it was unlikely he would meet the character requirements.

"We look at the nature and the seriousness of anybody's criminal conduct, we look at the protection of the Australian community and also what are community standards," he said.

"So even though he might have a cheer squad in Australia, that might be more than counter balanced by the expectations of the Australian community that he be refused a visa.

"What we can say is that in the past, people seeking to come to Australia with serious criminal convictions have been denied entry on character grounds."

Immigration lawyer Nick McNally, from Sydney firm Parish Patience, agreed Tyson would probably fail in gaining a visa.

But Mr McNally said Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone would also have to weigh up the economic benefits Tyson could bring to Australia if he held a fight here.
