Re: NRL EXPANSION
NRL has Signed off on an agreement with the AUS Government for PNG to enter as TEAM 19
Papua New Guinea is set to make history by joining the NRL in 2028 as part of a $600 million expansion.Backed by PM Anthony Albanese, the federal government has reached an in-principle agreement with the ARL to fund PNG as the 19th team, following the Western Bears' entry in 2027

Re: NRL EXPANSION
In principal is the each way bet & will be dependent on Labor winning the election next year. I don't think they will & that will be the end of the agreement & this will be a good thing for the game. The concept is flawed from the ground up & a disaster waiting to happen.leeroy*NRL* wrote: Wed Sep 18, 2024 4:57 pmNRL has Signed off on an agreement with the AUS Government for PNG to enter as TEAM 19

Re: NRL EXPANSION
Just read that. Going to be a massive task. Money is not the problem with the govt support but playing and living in a 3rd world country is almost an insurmountable challenge. if PVL can make this a success he will truly be the greatest sports administrator Australia has ever seen.leeroy*NRL* wrote: Wed Sep 18, 2024 4:57 pmNRL has Signed off on an agreement with the AUS Government for PNG to enter as TEAM 19

Re: NRL EXPANSION
And again
The NRL denies there is anything more finalised with the Govt & there are no new developments , & it is just another press beat up as it has been about 4 times this year

Thank goodness
The shit storm this stirs up every time though should be a pointer to the fact it is not a great idea

Re: NRL EXPANSION
Yep. I have serious doubts about this one. Expanding to Perth and NZ2 are no brainers. PNG is purely a political thing. And as in most things in politics it probably won't work.azif wrote: Fri Sep 20, 2024 2:11 pmAnd again

the MEDIA looked pretty confident of an Announcement next month to align with
Prime Ministers 13 touring PNG (as a day of Celebration)

Re: NRL EXPANSION
most articles i read, majority pointed to the 50th Anniversary for independence for PNG as the announcement or towards end of seasonazif wrote: Sat Sep 21, 2024 11:20 amthe media has been saying its a done deal for a year & an announcement is imminent & haven't been right yetleeroy*NRL* wrote: Sat Sep 21, 2024 11:09 amthe MEDIA looked pretty confident of an Announcement next month to align with

Re: NRL EXPANSION
WA Bears bid to enter the NRL has hit a bit of a hurdle ,
with the bid rejected , whether this means its dead in the water is unclear , I highly doubt it is , it just needs a bit more tidying up & some more guarantees provided
There are reports the NRL has asked for a $20 mill license fee , & the private consortium behind the bid apparently were only prepared to offer a portion of that & PVL essentially said..... theres the door
https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-pr ... 5a308086c7
the path forward
WA govt puts up the license fee , Roger Cook is determine to have a WA NRL team & this is highly likely
NRL takes ownership of the franchise with a view to selling it after say 10 years ... for a lot more then $20 mill
The consortium team re issues the bid & agrees to the fee
Things would need to happen quickly , the NRL wants its 18th team locked in by the end of this year with an entry for the start of 2027, so it can re negotiate its TV deal asap.

Re: NRL EXPANSION
Just curious/. How does ths “feeder team” concept work - is it still a thing for storm ? Where would the feeder team come from for Perth (and png) Don’t Storm have one located in tv Sunshine Coast or something ? Not really sure how it works to be honest but was just curious.
