Some pretty strong criticisms - even from RL folk

Rugby league broadcaster Phil Gould led the charge writing: “Oh please... it’s the Olympic Games... our country will be on show to the world... build it big and build it special.”

Tennis star John Millman also expressed shock at the plan: “But you’re planning on spending billions on old ones and some temporary seating?

Radio presenter Shane McInnes chimed in: “As it stands right now these are the next three venues to host Athletics at the Olympic Games. 2024 PARIS: Stade de France, 2028 LA: Los Angeles Coliseum, 2032 BRISBANE: Queensland Sport & Athletics Centre. Two are world class venues. One is a joke. Embarrassed [Stephen Miles]?”

And for Beassie:
Sports journalist Mark Gottlieb suggested the “Brisbane” Olympics should instead be held in Sydney, “Don’t have to spend a cent. The perfect Olympics for the Queensland Government,” he wrote sarcastically.

Seriously, I am not sure why they dont have the athletics at Carrara - have had it there before and went well. There is an athletes village going to be placed there and some events anyway?
Queensland… how embarrassing.

Heard NSW Premier this morning on radio saying pick up the phone and call him, Sydney is ready and will host with our proven record of hosting big international events and the best ever Olympic Games. Cheeky lol

3.4 billion for 1 stadium is insane
3 existing stadiums being updated for half that amount is sensible ....

There is going to be political casualties. ALP will definitely lose state election without a doubt now.

And now this admission.

They clearly have no idea what they are doing after funding a review then ignoring the key recommendation of said review. So embarrassing.

The Victoria Parl option I heard was more a precinct that included things like train stations, hospital, shops etc. I also thought the cost saving on the govt plan is cheaper, but bot by a great deal comparatively, it also leaves nothing. Add in that public transport improvements have not been factored in to Nathon area (but at least that will be leaving lasting improvements). And remember, there will have to be some major redevelopment of the Gabba anyway - whether a rebuild or new stadium elsewhere - so they are just kicking the can down the road on those costs.

With Cricket being a new Olympic Sport from 2028, are we to assume, cricket at a Brisbane Olympic Games would be played at the Gabba?

Cricket confirmed for 2028 LA Olympics
16 Oct 2023
Andrew Ramsey

"We look forward to working with the Australian Olympic Committee in the lead-up to the Los Angeles Games and are hopeful this will be the start of a long-standing relationship between cricket and the Olympics, including for Brisbane 2032."

It's the 20-over version with men and women's competitions that will feature at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, just months before that year's men's T20 World Cup which the ICC recently confirmed will be staged in Australia and New Zealand.

Cricket is then expected to be a centrepiece of the subsequent 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, with Australia guaranteed a place in the proposed men's and women's competitions as host nation.

And now the athletes are pointing out how stupid this Premier of QLD is, with our chances of winning medals now at risk.

Gees read the room dopey. This unbelievably costly and wasteful political decision is front page news 3 days running in Queensland and also making national headlines as an embarrassment for not only Brisbane and Queensland, but Australia.

I honestly think this Premier of QLD (Giggles apparently being his nickname), will need to resign soon over this mess of his own making. The LNP just sit back, laugh and enjoy the show.

Yeah - labour voter all my life but can’t vote for a Miles government - hoping a Teal option presents.

Decision has been widely panned. Clearly not thought out and reactionary. And to be clear - very few seeing it as an AFL /NRL thing. It’s simply just a very poor decision.

The simple question - and basic one : do you redevelop / build the new oval ground now (with added federal funds) or wait 10 years to go it (which Grave Grace has says will happen and an issue for future governments)).

Add in the need for massive transport infrastructure to QSAC, the reverting to a 14000 seat stadium when Olympics over, the cost of keeping the Gabba operational until the new one comes (10 years) - and it’s not hard to see why there is almost unanimous outcry against the QSAC plan.

Still don’t understand why the Premier would pay something like $500 million for a review, only to ignore the key recommendations.

Even RL people like Gus Gould have spoken publicly saying the idea is ridiculous.

Political suicide.
