Also - sitting here watching an AFL footy show on 7 is something I have always stated would be a good sign if starting to get serious in-roads.

it rates terrible though into northern states.Fred wrote: Wed Mar 13, 2024 10:41 pmAlso - sitting here watching an AFL footy show on 7 is something I have always stated would be a good sign if starting to get serious in-roads.
I would say AFL want Shows on main channel as part of tv deals to get more exposure.
alot more than making inroads
exactly what they have been doing with the 4 Northern teams on 7mate for the past 15 years
networks not making much but it is part of the package

Rugby codes will never be massive with Kids / adults / womenFred wrote: Wed Mar 13, 2024 10:25 pmPeople have been saying for decades that it is the Victorians moving to GC that props up the Aussie rules here. Whilst this is a factor, some of those who moved now have kids, grandkids, and great grand kids — that are brought up with Aussie rules. I can also speak from my own experience of kids coming over from RL and their parents, getting involved, building a liking for Aussie Rules as they finally start to understand the rules and not so foreign. It is also in the schools and a strong interschool competition. RL, at least a few years ago anyway, at junior level is very poorly run which puts a lot of parents off too - not to mention playing against boys who look like grown men who could be running security on cavil avenue lol.
Look how big Rugby league / union is in NSW and QLD but look how low
Tackle rugby is..
it is too brutal and only so many can play
(do agree) all these big kids the little ones cannot compete
this is where they a loss to other sports.
That is why you have to use all metrics of RUGBY (tackle tag and touch) for a bigger picture
(that is why i like to see stats ) of conversion rates from Victorians and Non Victorians
prob impossible to have but would be very interesting..
cause legit every AFL fan i meet is from Melbourne not from QLD
does not matter if they are 30 or 60

Having kids here who played Aussie rules I would agree many had parents who had come from Aussie rules states - yet there were (a minority) that grew up here and always some that came over fro. League - some went back though.

The good thing is the kids have options up here moreso other states - you can play any code you want - although playing Union is/has become harder on the coast. Were still in Victoria, where I live. it was Aussie rules and soccer. No rl or Union at all.

GWS need to focus on Western Sydney only and really push local engagement.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.
Rugby league, Australias most popular game in some of North Eastern Australia.

Re: GWS / SUNS >> How much more dollars
Think that’s a stretch LeRoy - if that were the case every game shown into qld would be on main channel. I think it’s a good sign although likely on the back of the show doing the cricket over summer and a general sports show as well over summer which rated well.leeroy*NRL* wrote: Thu Mar 14, 2024 4:18 pmit rates terrible though into northern states.Fred wrote: Wed Mar 13, 2024 10:41 pmAlso - sitting here watching an AFL footy show on 7 is something I have always stated would be a good sign if starting to get serious in-roads.

Re: GWS / SUNS >> How much more dollars
There are a few adult clubs and a few leagues I believe. Bond Uni play in a local comp Div 2. Southport and Suns (along with Brisbane and maybe Aspley? Play in the VFL (used to be Neafl). Your Labrador’s, Broadbeach, Palm Beach etc are the local Gold Coast top league. PAC pines not in that (didn’t think they had a se or team).. And of course each team has a 1st and 2nds and Under 17s. I’ll have a look for more.leeroy*NRL* wrote: Sun Mar 17, 2024 4:18 pmyep plenty of options..Fred wrote: Thu Mar 14, 2024 7:41 pmThe good thing is the kids have options up here moreso other states - you can play any code you want - although playing Union is/has become harder on the coast. Re: GWS / SUNS >> How much more dollars
I have been attending AFL games in Sydney since 1990. I remember really sad looking Swans crowds at the SCG and talk of ending the AFL expansion idea in NSW. A Swans membership base back then of a bit over 3,000. Gees I still remember free tickets to the SCG with any Whopper Junior meal purchase at Hungry Jacks and no special event buses even put on from Central Station.Quolls2019 wrote: Sun Mar 17, 2024 6:59 pmGWS need to focus on Western Sydney only and really push local engagement.
Thankfully the AFL thinks long term development and look at the powerhouse Swans today as a result of that forward thinking. Moral of the story, expansion and growth takes time. Something the NRL should have considered before axing their clubs in Perth and Adelaide.
Agreed however that the AFL and Giants need to focus more on Western Sydney. Drop the silly GWS name for a start and just call them Western Sydney Giants. And play games against clubs like North Melbourne and Gold Coast at Blacktown during the Easter Show period. Hard to believe, but the Giants will not have a home game again this season in Western Sydney until Round 10. How do you build momentum and a stronger base/following with a fixture like that?

Re: GWS / SUNS >> How much more dollars
Greater Western Sydney is the worse name in Australian Sport, surley the feedback by now was to drop Greater..
its been 12 years now in existence..
and crowds are worse.. they only get bigger when big teams travel to them
imagen being a sporting franchise and you look at the books end of year.
and you only turned a profit because of away fans filling the stadium
wow round 10 until there next home game..
good point playing out of blacktown has a capacity of 10k too

Yes, I think we all agree that there is a lot of work to do for GWS - on feild they are brilliant - if feild - terrible and boarding on irrelevant. At least they have one area going well I guess - but I would suspect the later more important.

Yep. They stuffed it up from the start. Based themselves in Blacktown, which actually is in greater western Sydney, but then turned their back on 'em and moved to Homebush. Which is classified as the inner west. But have to vacate the ground early in the season for the Royal Easter Show. Then they go and play 'home' games in Canberra. Typical AFL thinking they know the market when in fact they haven't got a clue.
They couldn't possibly be going any worse.
