For a code that claims to lead the way in Australian sport, they sure seem to copy the NRL & Rugby League a lot..
Wanting to do night time Grand Finals like the NRL.
Moving their code to Qld after lockdowns like the NRL
Having indigenous rounds like the NRL
NRL has test matches, AFL attempts some lame thing against Ireland.
The Rugby league have a world cup, AFL attempts an international cup with no spectators and where Australia don't compete.
NRL is played on a rectangular field, AFL copy and come up with AFL X played on a rectangular field.
Maybe they can change the rules where you don't get a point for a missed shot at goal too like the NRL has.
Now they want to do magic round too lol..
Not sure how they will do it when AFL matches go so long.

Has actually been a successful concept in the UK Superleague for ages.

Unless they do it over a long weekend maybe. I don’t think Sydney will work either - could work in Brisbane /Gold Coast

Sydney will rely heavily on Interstate visitors for the match. (which has NSW Government smiling)
i think all states will throw good coin at it.

Why would the AFL want to do a magic round like the NRL! I just don't get it.
Obviously it works in the NRL as no one goes to the games in Sydney so doing it in Brisbane makes sense for the NRL cause they really have nothing to lose.
AFL would be stupid to copy this ridiculous thing as they don't need to as they get massive crowds to most games unlike the NSWRL. Oh sorry the NRL

Government will hand over $5 to 10Million for the event.
its a winner for the State it is a winner for the clubs and the league.

The AFL does not need $5-10 Million.
They would make that anyway without the magic round as they get massive crowds all around the country each round.

I think it needs a balance - you want it where it will be well attended - but also the coin from government is good. So I think for point 1 I would rule out Sydney as whilst people may travel you also need a decent local support - more so than Sydney currently has. Will people want to go to Adelaide? I mean seriously - it is not a go to destination for many - you need something outside the footy to also attract. To me Brisbane is the obvious destination. You have two grounds - Gabba and Metricon which can be utilized. It is a go to holiday destination so added incentive and you have a fairly good grassroots supporter base - so plenty of locals to go. Make it an event type thing and put on a party - and it is the only place for mine.

The Gabba had a magic round for about a year in 2020. It was because of Covid & no one hardly went to most of the games.
I don't see how that would change in 2023 for a magic round as not many people really follow the footy in Brisbane other some Lions games.

You'd be surprised - I think if it is promoted as a one off event it would get tourists in and there are plenty of AFL supporters here as well. I'd do it over a long weekend. Plus, isn't the idea of magic round having a few games on the one day ? Imagine playing a smaller game out at Springfield etc.Pete__09 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 11:53 amThe Gabba had a magic round for about a year in 2020. I think the challenge AFL has that the NRL don't for the main is that AFL has there supporter base spread out across the country - so are your Freo and West Coast fans going to travel all that way? Whereas in NRL you have pretty much a concentration of fans between Brisbane and Sydney and there are a lot of Broncos fans but also many locals who follow other. NRL teams. And it's an hour cheap flight or an 8-9 hour road trip. Lots of things to consider I agree.

Gabba and Gold Coast had so many games that year.. in the not effected State of QLD
90% of games were empty.
(if i were the AFL i would play MAGIC in Sydney)

fans would travel from Melbourne in there 10's of thousands, for each day.
if you watch NSW AND QLD Clubs they always have very good numbers in the crowd from the away team
Make it an event and around holiday period, it is bound to be a success.

1. 90 percent were not empty.leeroy*NRL* wrote: ↑Fri Oct 28, 2022 9:35 amGabba and Gold Coast had so many games that year.. in the not effected State of QLD

2. People couldn't travel to QLD from interstate.
3. People still concerned with Covid
4. I believe limits still on crowds - yes, pretty sure there was.
5. A targeted one off weekend event is different to playing across a season.
6. You have many more AFL supporters in QLD than Sydney.
