Did Nine bid include sacrificing the NRL?
Nine denies it considered dropping the NRL when it made an audacious 11th-hour bid for the AFL broadcast rights. But sources say the AFL pitch provoked an intriguing conversation.

Sorry don't have the full article. But it would've interesting to see what would happen if 9 had won the rights.
In fact both other bids would be interesting to see.
that would of been terrific on the NRL and fans part if CH9 left

i suspect channel 9 would of had to pay a big fee to leave or potentially been sued.

I recan channel 10 would of jumped on board.. would of been a win win

Wookie would you agree Tasmania is a lock and ready to go now

I recan the Tv deal includes Tasmania's entry
with entry in 2026 approx
With a VFL team in 23 or 24.
Absolutely not. They tried that before and it nearly wrecked the game in Tassie. It's straight into the AFL - timing depends on the other clubs saying yes and also whether it's a 19th club or a relocation (I think it will be the latter because none of the clubs want a weekly bye).

And tassie were fairly recently considering rejoining the vfl as a stepping stone to the big league.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.

Different circumstances. This would lead into the AFL side for development and list building. GWS and Gold Coast did the same.

It categorically wont be a relocation. Especially not after yesterday.

The doyen of sports writers, Roy Masters, has now spoken. And he has confirmed my predictions. Gilty has fudged his numbers with massive contra and money from Telstra for Marvel Stadium.

The $642M per year is a lie. The actual amount is $550M. Still a good amount so congratulations to Gilty and all the fumble followers here for that. (Go crazy with ya rattles and red cordials kids lololol).

But Remember this kicks in in 2025. Roy confirms the NRL currently gets $450M a year. Almost on parity in aggregate and well in front per hour of content in the current deal. For 3 years RL will be behind by $100M. But they will start re-negotiating early and recover this amount well before the fumbling deal finishes in 2031.

Bottom line: The AFL has done better than expected. But due to the long 9 year term of the current AFL deals the NRL has plenty of room to make up the difference and pull ahead.

Thanks to Roy for his expert analysis. I now expect amateur mug punter fumbling fans here will go nuts. I wait in anticipation lololololol!!!!!!!!

Just come across this from Roy - even he is lauding the AFL deal and bagging Vlandys

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/rubber ... 5bg2t.html

"Still, industry sources claim the AFL will receive $100m a year more than the NRL’s $450m, a significant gap considering the broadcasting incomes for the two codes were similar a decade ago, allowing for the AFL providing one more game per week."

Some insist the NRL’s annual TV income of $450m is exaggerated, but the code did receive a record doubling of its international broadcasting fees last year.

Others believe the annual gap with AFL is $170m, not $100m, if contra is removed from both deals. The AFL mega payment further incited the critics of ARL Commission boss Peter V’landys, who renewed the Foxtel deal in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, rather than wait until this year when the original contract expired.

When Roy, try as he might, finds it hard to spin in favour of the NRL - then that is saying something.

and there was this also in the article:

The AFL extended their rights for just two years. V’landys awarded Foxtel a seven-year extension until 2027, believed to be for an annual payment of $300m.

It was done at a time there was no rival bidder, and he separated pay TV from free-to-air, meaning that when Nine later renewed with the NRL, the owner of this masthead was in a one-horse race.

By contrast, the AFL orchestrated an auction, offering both pay and FTA rights, forcing Seven and Fox into sometimes fierce competition with each other. It also attracted bids from Channels Nine/Stan and Ten/Paramount, producing the competitive tension which forced up the price Seven/Foxtel initially offered and even exceeded the AFL’s own estimations.

Think V'landy's handled the TV rights appallingly - comparing him to the great Gill he looks amateurish.

Lol its a lie. Sure it is. The term you are looking for is confirmation bias.

Hes done exactly the same thing every NRL apologist is doing today - "oh you cant include Telstra". Well fuck up kids, they were part of the AFLs media rights deal. They werent part of the NRLs. Cry all you like about it.

Roy cant confirm jackshit - everyone is guessing the Fox contributions to both deals.

They shouldn't. Like I said, it nearly destroyed the game before. They are NOT to go down that path. It would be suicide.

It will be relocation - or no Tassie team in the AFL. The only other chance would be a 20th license.

Well they can’t have a 20th team without a 19th…and they will have both…the 20th will follow, a question of where and when?
