AFL Finals 2022

Post by Quolls2019 »

Brisbane on a Thursday night? What are they thinking? TV ratings only?
Only 4 games, 2 outside of Victoria, maybe 1 Friday, 1 Saturday afternoon, 1 Saturday evening and 1 Sunday.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.

Pretty sure they skipped Sunday because they are trying to avoid six day turnarounds during the finals. Minimum of seven with the grand final on a Saturday. I think some local leagues should take advantage of that for bigger crowds with no AFL competition. Finals this coming weekend will be popular.

Agree? Ridiculous. Must be TV ratings?

I see no problem with Lions being on the Thursday.

It is the smallest stadium this 1st round of finals.
they should get 30k

Saturday prob ruled the lions out with
Bronx playing at 5:30
Cows playing at 7:30

Lions have competed against both on 19/8, against the Broncos & Titans on 11/6 and against the Broncos on 10/7, didn’t seem to have a lot of influence on the Lions.

To me an odd decision.

Yes. It stops clubs playing dead in the final round and rest players they shouldn't. The week off is for that rest.

Along with the benefit it gives local footy - AND gives the opening round of AFLW a free ride.

Well it does give a lot of the local, country and junior leagues a chance to play their GF’s with out AFL competition.
And does allow the AFLW to start the same way.
But, no, I don't like it…breaks the momentum of the excitement.

May not last.

Hate it. They need to celebrate who finishes on top as the best team - have a week off and have the finals as a seperate comp - knock out with all teams ! Having a break I believe makes the distinction even more so. I’ve always said the team that finishes top is the best - the team that runs the grand final us simply the best team of the end of season comp. Give me the soccer way of doing it any day.

They used to do that way back in the beginning of the VFL. It only lasted three years - it was stopped after Melbourne came from sixth in the eight team competition to win the premiership. It will be opposed because it makes all the finalists even and takes away the value of the double chance and home finals. In a national competition you can't have neutral venues for every final.

That was the 1900 season…the system for determining the finals made no sense, and how Melbourne made it into the semi final (technically an elimination final) was very strange. Only lasted a year, after which a system closer to todays was introduced.

It lasted three seasons, not one. 1898 to 1900.

Got my tickets, flights and hotel booked for next Friday night.

So excited.

What do you think of the new finals campaign ad?

1900 is when Melbourne won from 6th.

After reading my post, it was not clear that I meant it only lasted until 1900.
So, in this instance, I agree with what you are saying.
There is one year where the “wooden spooner” team won the premiership.
