which I guess the AFL feels creates a market to explore and mine.
AFL has huge advantages over league.

It can use Cricket Fields in the Winter

rugby league Rugby Union and Soccer all fight for the rectangle fields.

Wookie is reporting that

GWS AND SWANS membership numbers interstate.
2016 numbers (i could only assume this has grown

On to Membership - a few qualifiers here. The Swans reported in 2016 that 20% of their membership was based in Melbourne, and the Giants reported in 2018 that 15% of their membership was based in the ACT. Their figures have been adjusted here.

As Wookie points out, the AFL’s expansion is long term and strategic with everyone it seems… bar NRL supporters understanding that. It’s very stark to the pathetic failed NRL expansion ventures of the past to South and Western Australia.

Ha - extra 10k TV viewers due to being on main channel more often is not growth. It's reaching. Fact is this year western sydney team actually playing in front of some of it's smallest crowds ever. Tweet is just PR spin to counter view most are coming to that league has flushed $200 million down toilet.

Many said similar things about the Swans in Sydney in their early years. Now look… they’re easily the biggest sporting club in NSW for crowds, membership and sponsorship. Could you ever dream of saying something like that when it come to the Melbourne Storm in Victoria? Of course not. lol

Yeah, swans were getting big crowds in the 80's & mid 90's when they made finals. Western Sydney made grand final & there was no bump. This is code's Vietnam war

Basic conclusion: This is bumsniffing Wookies conclusion. Which makes it irrelevant. The dill continues to assume some authority or knowledge he simply does not possess.

The objective conclusion is that the Ginats have been, and continue to be, an unmitigated disaster. A blackhole money pit. A plastic entity without a soul. An unloved bastard child of the golden west of Sydney.

They simply do not belong in our great western suburbs. Any sane organisation would close 'em down. They wouldn't be missed. No one would even be aware they'd left. Shut 'em down and forget about 'em!!!!

Haha - participation has increased because game spends million on auskick (can't get any of those kids to watch game tho). TV ratings haven't gone up. At best team in western Sydney may get 10k more than game otherwise but that basically because they on main channel more. Membership & attendance is blah. Look at the games on TV & twitter; empty stadiums are reported as 10k+.

Tweet comes about because daily mail nailed it on the head; since team in western Sydney was astro turfed there's still less than 1% of ppl here with interest in game..

The afl is a business. Biggest sporting business in Australia by a country mile. No one disputes that. Western Sydney is a huge untapped market for the AFL - they simply needed to grow the game there. It’s a business decision. Take the parochialism of football out of it - put another product in its place with the same predicament. To not try and grow the game in one of the countries most populated areas would be negligent. Have they made mistake, I believe so. However, the biggest mistake would have not to have done something. This is business 101 guys. The other mistake would not be to adjust and change based on incoming collateral. If it were me, I’d admit Canberra was a mistake. Pull away from this. People in western Sydney are not going to have but in with a part-time team. I’d even think about naming the team after a suburb - yes, you may alienate some but you’ll grab those from that area. Look at another team in the area in 20 years maybe. But that’s, admittedly, just a option to explore. I do agree that a change is needed. How to do that is the question. They must maintain a side in the area. That’s a no brainer. They are failing at hearts and minds - that’s also obvious. The game is growing - this is true. But that’s no good if people choose to support another team in the afl! We see this with the titans on the Gold Coast where Rl rules but people seem to choose another Rl team. I think that’s what happening with GWS - those who do follow afl only a small percentage follow the giants.
