Watched a couple of games - well as much as I could and standard was really poor - I think a good Under 16 boys side would beat the teams I watched. In saying that, I am not knocking the initiative and it has opened up a large marker and brought many women into the game. But let’s be real - the standard needs to improve.

Round 1

SEVEN’S AFL: WEDNESDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL Seven Network 548,000 41,000 333,000 34,000 79,000 60,000
SEVEN’S AFL: WEDNESDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL 7mate 118,000 37,000 23,000 57,000

Oddly, the 1st half was broadcast on 7mate in Sydney and Brisbane, before switching to the the primary channel at half time and broadcast on 7mate from 4pm in Perth - before another late switch to the primary channel. Strange programming and up against the Married at First Sight juggernaut on Nine. Still, 75% of all viewers in Melbourne and 80% in Adelaide tuning into the footy. Good to see Sydney audience up 26% on the 2021 season opener too.

By the numbers: The first game of the 2022 AFL season on Seven

• The clash peaked at 1.09 million viewers across Australia

The 2022 AFL Premiership Season scored high on Seven, with the Grand Final rematch between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs reaching 2.26 million viewers nationally.

The clash peaked at 1.09 million viewers across Australia, with the match averaging 734,000 viewers, up 9% on the 2021 AFL series average.

Broadcast on Seven and 7mate, Melbourne’s 26-point win was the #1 program in their hometown in total people, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s – and was up 26% in Sydney on the 2021 season opener.

Played in front of a 58,000-strong crowd at the MCG, the game helped Seven grow its overnight audience in 25 to 54s by 64% year-on-year and by 30% in total people.

Seven’s coverage brought in 73% of the overall TV audience for last night’s game, including 75% of all viewers in Melbourne and 80% in Adelaide.

The Front Bar returned to normal programming straight after the match to cover the game, averaging 469,000 viewers, up 36% year-on-year.

Managing director Seven Melbourne and head of network sport, Lewis Martin, said: “After a record-breaking 2021 AFL Grand Final – the biggest television program last year – we’re thrilled to once again share Australia’s number one winter sport with millions of Australians, live and free on Seven.

“Seven’s prime time coverage, underpinned by our expert commentary and insights, delivered fresh perspective on the match and transported fans to the heart of the action.

“For the first time in a long time, we heard the roar of a footy-hungry Melbourne and Western Bulldogs crowd. The game injected new life into the hearts of Melburnians, and I can’t wait to see how they react tonight when we return to the MCG to witness the new-look Blues take on Richmond, broadcast live and free on Seven,” he said.

Ah, contact sport of a different kind.

Without MAFS, Seven wins with footy.

Numbers down for second game of AFL season, but footy still the big drawcard

Carlton beat Richmond in the second AFL game of the 2022 season -- 677,000 nationally, down from Wednesday night’s opener of 734,000. Another 232,000 watched on Foxtel, down from Wednesday’s 268,000. And of course the AFL accounted for the NRL game between Melbourne and Souths, won by Melbourne in golden point -- 517,000 people watched, another 206,000 on Foxtel.

As a result, Seven beat Nine because there was no Married at First Sight on Nine last night.
