Game 1






• State of Origin now highest rating program of 2021 – up 13.4% on last year’s Game 1

Nine TV Ratings

Nine had the top primary (37.2%) and network (43.3%) share last night thanks to the success of the first match of the State of Origin which had 1,911,000 metro viewers.

The match had 861,000 tune in from Sydney and 609,000 from Brisbane as the match was the top program in both markets as New South Wales easily handled Queensland to the tune of 50-6.

Last year’s Game 1 came in November and had 1,598,000 viewers which was the smallest metro audience since 2003, the streaming audience was 174,000. Game 1 in 2019 before the Covid-19 induced schedule change was 2,178,000.

STATE OF ORIGIN: GAME 1 ACHIEVES LIVE AUDIENCE OF NEARLY 3 MILLION AND SHATTERS RECORDS

State of Origin: Game 1 last night achieved a live average national audience of 2,988,000 people across linear broadcast on Channel 9 and BVOD streaming on 9Now, making it the most-watched program of the year to-date in Australia and exceeding all expectations.

On Channel 9, the national average audience was up 12.7% on Game 1 of the 2020 series with 2.708 million people . On 9Now, the Live BVOD Audience was up by a massive 56% year-on-year with 280,000 (including co-viewing) – the largest Live BVOD Audience ever recorded on any CFTA BVOD platform in Australian history.

The match saw the stellar NSW Blues decisively beating QLD Maroons 50-6 during the first State of Origin game ever played at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium, taking a 1-0 series lead in the three game series.

Game 2 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane ensures another hostile reception awaits the Blues, as the Maroons hope to square up the series.

Brent Williams, Nine’s Director of Sport, said :“We’re thrilled so many viewers tuned into last night’s broadcast of State of Origin. Close to three million Australians were watching this great rivalry play out across Channel 9 and 9Now, making it the most watched program of the year and a huge increase on last year’s game one. National audiences were up by 13.4% year-on-year, and a further 280,000 viewers streamed the match on 9Now which breaks the all-time BVOD record – and is also a massive 56% year-on-year increase.”

Women’s State of Origin

It is Origin weekend at Nine as the festival of rugby league started with the women’s clash with Queensland winning a close contest over NSW. The match, played at the Sunshine Coast Stadium, had an audience of 288,000 with 144,000 Sydney 119,000 in Brisbane.

With 1,8262,000 viewers, New South Wales wasn’t the only winner in the State of Origin as Nine was easily the top primary channel with 34.5% and also the top network with 40.9% last night. This was more than 15 points clear of its nearest competitor in both categories.

While game two of Origin was down slightly on game one’s 1,911,000 metro viewers it was up on last year’s game two (1,654,000) which came in a covid affected end of season series.

The match had almost one million come in from Sydney with 972,000 viewers and 544,000 coming in from Brisbane.

Game 3




The State of Origin pushed Nine to #1 last night with 1,746,000 viewers helping produce a primary channel share of 33.8% and a 40.3% network share.

In a close affair, Queensland won the dead rubber 20-18 with 902,000 tuning in from Sydney and 502,000 watching from Brisbane.

This was down on the first two games of the series after the shield was already decided in game two with NSW winning 38-0.

Game 1: 1,911,000
Game 2: 1,8262,000
Game 3: 1,746,000


This was also down on last year’s game three which was the deciding game of the series and had 1,882,000 viewers. This match aired in November due to a Covid affected schedule.

The national audience for the match was 2,520,000.
