Yeah, but Freddo..................it's the only place anyone actually BUYS real memberships and really follows this lame mob. No one in Sydney could give a f__k about em'. I wouldn't be surprised if gilty perseveres with this money pit disaster he moves it to Canberra fulltime. It just makes sense pal!!!

Re: Do GWS have any REAL supporters??
They need to be in western Sydney . Same as the swans needed to be in Sydney.. now look at them. The error would to not be on western Sydney and 20 years later regretting it. It is simply a must.

I agree, promote the game in Western Sydney, they should not play games in Canberra.
There are lies, damn lies and then there are ratings.
Rugby league, Australias most popular game in some of North Eastern Australia.

Agreed and think the Giants should drop the whole Greater from their name and just be known as the Western Sydney Giants. GWS sounds vague and silly from a marketing perspective if you ask me.Quolls2019 wrote: Sun Apr 18, 2021 11:29 pmI agree, promote the game in Western Sydney, they should not play games in Canberra.
I can however see why the Canberra market is important financially too. The Swans used to play games in Canberra too prior to the Giants entry to the AFL. The ACT Government is very supportive of the AFL $$$ wise from what I understand.

Re: Do GWS have any REAL supporters??
When Tassy gets in, serious consideration should be given to basing a side in Canberra to include most of southern NSW. The coast, Wagga Wagga, Albury etc, one home game to be played in Albury and Wagga. Canberra would probably need a stadium with a roof. Not too sure of a good name, need something all encompassing.
Would take as long to get support as GWS.
Which I would continue to persevere with,
Agree with the name change, I think they initially avoided it because of Western Bulldogs and west Coast.

100% the whole Western Name is a shocker.
I think the AFL Backed the Giants playing in Canberra For what has been said.
Financial Gain and members for more support.
as Western Sydney has very little...
Like a Back up Plan

Yep. Years ago they used to put out the "AFL is booming in western Sydney" propaganda. As we all know that got blown out of the water by Dr. Lawson, now under house arrest.leeroy*NRL* wrote: Mon Apr 19, 2021 10:59 am100% the whole Western Name is a shocker.

So recently they put out the "AFL booming in Rugby Union area's" in the east and north. Which isn't really a big claim considering how well Rugby is going at the moment.
They're like a big squealing moving target. But I agree Canberra is definitely a back plan!!!!

Re: Do GWS have any REAL supporters??
The AFL need a presence in Sydney's west - it is just good business and good business planning - it is just such a big market not to have any presence. Yet you see RL who have little presence in Sydney's North - AFL will persevere in Western Sydney - it as is much a bottom up as it is a top down approach - I would say the bottom up approach is foremost - evidenced by te growth in actual bricks and mortar clubs, the growth in playing numbers - the growth in senior teams. These simply cannot be ignored. To have a team to focus that support is vital although I suspect these juniors and those new to the game are going to focus on other clubs. The easy thing for the AFL to do was not to place a team in Western Sydney - but that is short sighted and bad business.

Yeah agree what they are trying to do is a tough thing to conquer, but make's smart business sense to try and do so.Fred wrote: Mon Apr 19, 2021 2:14 pmThe AFL need a presence in Sydney's west - it is just good business and good business planning - it is just such a big market not to have any presence. as the size of West Sydney is Huge and Exploding...
I do think though the AFL is struggling and what they have invested is for very little return..
i also do understand that it is a long term plan... but again it is not going to well...
likewise with the Swans it is a different story, what has been Union & Leagues Loss has been AFL's gain.
while League and Union is still the dominate code on the forgotten North Shore..
AFL is making big waves, that past 10 years plus.

Re: Do GWS have any REAL supporters??
To me it makes no sense. Why not just let Canberra have their own team.
Is like putting a new NBL team in Melbourne but playing half their games in Bendigo.
Is beyond stupid.
They will never have a big impact in Western Sydney when they play half their games in another region that is completely different to Western Sydney in every way.
