Wow
AFL fans still can’t grasp the fact that year on year, Rugby League is the most watched sport on Television .
It’s laughable that people still claim otherwise.

so lets ignore all ratings because they're innacurate? Cool, close the forum
we should have done that 9 years ago then , when AFL fans were crying & stamping their feet claiming all their veiwers weren't being included & this was why the NRL was handing the AFL its ass on a plate

fact is , in 2012 it all went very strange & no one can put a reasonable reason up as to why.
Both codes do not attract anywhere near the numbers they did 8 & 9 years ago .... not even close.
1. FTA TV ratings have been dropping for all programs accross the world, including major sports like NFL and EPL
2. TV has more channels so viewers have more choice. This translates to lower ratings for individual programs
3. Streaming like netflix has taken many viewers away, as has online gaming
4. Kayo has taken away 10% of sports viewers

The NRL's regional audience is about 2/3rds of their FTA audience, which is logical given the size of the regional v metro populations. The AFL's regionals are about 1/3rd of their metro's, which again makes logical sense.

You're living in the past Raiderdave. The AFL dominate the TV ratings, and have for many years now
idk who raiderdave is but anyway

the AFL was being destroyed in the ratings less then a decade ago , the proof is here in this thread
the NRL used to get more ratings on fta for the 3 games on fta , then the afl got on fta & pay combined because our regionals were being calculated correctly

not any more

yes it was an awesome first week of finals, but lets be honest, we outrated the NRL by a very large margin
easily outrated most games.

NRL needs its prime teams to match AFL in Finals.
otherwise it is no match.

the lift in ratings for NRL for finals 1st week is not really much of a jump.

be interesting to see week 2
the AFLs ratings were inflated by VIC
nothing much more , a slight bump in the other states

the NRL is being hurt because of QLD

we more then match them in finals in the past & will again
it is interesting point you make.
regionals have decreased quite abit to what they once were.
You could blame streaming to this.

(i dont have the best knowledge on this )
with WIN selling out how come it has decreased by some margin ??

(also yes) with no QLD team in Finals it hurts NRL quite some bit)

and yes i Know Lockdown Has Lifted Victorian figures this year)

If lockdown continues they could be looking at quite a big number in Melbourne also for the Grand Final.

I've only ever seen 1 person post like you Dave, in short lines, with endings like "end of". Anyway, welcome back raiderdave.

Here's the issue with NRL ratings, Sydney is averaging about 200-250k for the NRL, and Brisbane 100-150k. The AFL in melbourne rates about or above that on it's own. The regionals are still about the same for the NRL as they've ever been, but the AFL's full regional ratings are now available to everyone.

I know it must be dissapointing but the AFL has been obliterating the AFL in TV ratings for competing matches for years now.

wanna bet wookie ??
I seem to have left out the word generally. And no i couldnt from memory tell you what the ratings were 9 years ago.
found this in 5 minutes
the finals totals & some other fluff from 2011..... your memory needs some work
aint like you didnt have to look it up either champ.
this was pretty common back then.
the NRLs ratings only started to suffer when huge areas of our regionals stopped being included about 5 years ago when WIN was sold to Sthn Cross 10 which has far less reach.
While regionals may have been affected by the league switching networks in 2016, but. what did change was the switch from a different live game being showed on Friday night in Sydney and Brisbane which was effectively tailoring the live game to each market with the delayed game being the reverse - this distorted the live game reporting, the per match total was nothing like what was being touted in NRL fan circles at times - its ironic because theres some whinging when seven dares to include 2 games in a broadcast total, but Nine did it for years before Seven did.

Regional average 2014 - 387k
Regional Average 2015 - 311k
Regional Average 2016 - 301k
Regional Average 2017 - 252k
Regional Average 2018 - 253k
Regional Average 2019 - 221k
Regional Average 2020 - 215k
Suddenly our regional audience went from double that of the AFL's , to about on par despite the NRL's regional population being double that of the AFLs.
Maybe not.

AFL regional averages.

2019 - 95k
2020 - 92k

Are we expected to believe that people across the ACT , regional NSW & QLD just stopped watching NRL. Its quite ridiculous.

387K to 211K in 6 years
yeah , nothing to see here lol

calculate our regionals correctly & finals would be ours too

are we expected to believe this are we

the knights NNSW & raiders SNSW finals games attracted roughly the same or less regional viewers then AFL finals games with no regional teams playing
the regional population of the NRL states is 6 million
the regional population of the AFL states is 3 million

yeah

nothing to see here

the regionals are calculated the same way they have been since the system changed in 2001. the only difference is the number of ratings boxes has increased.
are we expected to believe this are we
Yes. Its what the data shows.

games that drew 1.5 million on their ear 10 years ago on FTA alone in the NRL now struggle to get to 1 million on FTA , PTV .. & streaming devices combined despite the population of NRL states increasing by 1.5 million in that time !!

Its not changing veiwing habits or a drop in interest or anything like that , its just BS plain & simple.

yes it is a change in viewer habits! You are so far in denial it's not funny

1. Programs 10 years ago rated far higher on FTA.
https://tvtonight.com.au/2010/09/week-38-2.html
Highest rating program on Sunday the 7th of September 2010 rated over 2mil. The nightly news rated over 1.6mil. 11 programs rated over 1mil

https://tvtonight.com.au/2020/10/sunday ... -2020.html
On Sunday the 4th of October 2020 the highest rating program barely got over 1mil. It was the only program to rate over 1mil. The nightly news rated 600k lower than 2010. SOund familiar?

2. Ten years ago the NRL's FN ratings were a combination of 2 targeted games, so of course they rated higher than today's single game

3. Ten years ago the NRL was not shown live on FTA and FOX concurrently. In comparison the AFL was shown on 1hr delay at 8.30pm

4. Streaming services add even more options for viewers, including KAYO

All of these combined have had a massive impact on the NRL's ratings, both metro and regional. There's no way the NRL regional ratings are still going to be 400-500k when your metro ratings are barely 350k. The truth is the current ratings arent misleading, you are
