AngloFL failed global expansion.. next destination

I came across a rather interesting detail in the article below about AFL international expansion. It seems it was investigated by the VFL in 1987. A team was to be re-located to LA or San Fran and called the Crocodiles. It was apparently rejected at board level. But the fact it was even discussed at board level shows how serious about international expansion they were then and remain today. You know...…..a team in Auckland. AFL in China exploding lol!!!!!

Maybe if the Suns or Ginats keep floundering they'll move 'em to good 'ol LA. They'd probably get Shanghai like 'sold out' stadiums and massive turnover in the hospitality tents. Gee...……….the players would even get mobbed down on Venice beach. Bring it on I say!!!

Sounds good!!!! The Wolfpack are a bit of a worry at the moment having not won a game though. If they finish last they will be relegated after one season. It'll be interesting to see what happens to them if that occurs.

It is beyond delusional to think Americans or even Canadians would ever get into AFL.

The reason is because AFL culture is so far removed to anything even remotely resembling American sports.

The field dimensions are different (being round)
The goals are different.
The structure of the game plays are unlike anything Americans could ever find relatable.
Even the banning of cheerleaders would be seen as very unAmerican.

Is plain to see Rugby League is having a lot more success with the North American market. (2 teams in Canada soon and another planned for New York)

It is a sport that has a lot more cultural traits they can relate too over there.
From the field dimensions, to the line breaks, to structured plays, to conversion kicks, from strict boundary lines to trys and touchdowns.
The similarities are endless. One reason why so many Rugby League fans appreciate NFL.
