You think WA is still a viable expansion market for the NRL? Many leaguies thought as much. Not sure that’s the case after this weekend’s total flop.

I think nrl need to expand to Perth. For the sole reason that guy is saying not to..... because it is basically non existent. It’s the same reason for afl expanding into western Sydney ... whilst the risks are high and it is costly ... to not do so would be more costly. It’s a big market that needs to be infiltrated. Challenge for rl is that grassroots is so so small in Perth but probably better there than anyone else/. The other option is Darwin/ Alice Springs ... one of those has a decent grass roots however probably less viable than Perth.

I think the nrl need to go to Perth. Where’s the growth in another Brisbane team?

I think it is that type of short term thinking that has plagued the nrl and rl in general. Long term option to grow the game in this country outside nsw and qls would be to go to perth. The short term gain would be to chase dollars with a second team in Brisbane but to the detriment to the growth of the game. That’s why you see the afl go to western Sydney and not tassie or a third day or wa team ... whilst there may be growth the possibility of gaining a foothold in the last bastion of Sydney’s western suburbs along with it being a hugh untapped market was the prudent decision. The nrl need to grow the game outside nsw and qld ... yes they don’t have the money the afl has and maybe it’s a two step process ... get the money from a second Brisbane team and with that expand the game ... bit why not do both ?

like the same pace as the storm did in Melbourne? they are now up to 2 players :(/

and you loons claim no one plays afl in QLD or NSW
despite hundreds of players have played in the system in the past 20 odd years alone :)))
Australian sporting sponsorship
AFL excess of $50m
A league $30 million plus
ARU $27 million
NRLOL $25 million

Yeah I agree NRL have to expand outside NSW AND QLD> to capture new audience, new fans, more sponsors. more grassroots

they have to go 18 teams not 17

they may go small steps

17 teams 2023
18 teams 2025

Seems we agree on the general principal of the need to expand Leroy. Understanding the financial constraints the nrl may have compared to the afl and thus different constraints, but I think a team in Perth is the priority .... maybe that does mean a Brisbane team first to get the money to fund a perth team ....???? But the Perth team needs to be the end goal. I just think the nrl, if they do get the money from a Brisbane team will find a way to stuff that up ... whether greedy clubs wanting more or something else. The nrl have traditionally been so risk adverse... needing to have all their ducks lined up before doing something I think this has actually sent them backwards in years gone by. Been a bit better last few years though so will wait and see.

yeah brisbane is the safe bet, will bring in media presence sponsors crowds tv ratings without even trying.

regards to the Perth Team, NRL will contribute $$$ little to Perth.

NRL is different to AFL> A bid will be put in place and financial case put forward.
all the funding is up to the Team.
for the NRL it will cost little. bar the $13 million which is distributed to the club.

it is more will it succeed up to the standards of what the NRL wants.

I think that will be a mistake making it an independent “business” venture with support from the parent company. Who would set up a business in a basically bare market without head office propping it up in the start up phase.... which could be 20 years. Maybe this is the obstacle as nrl likely couldn’t afford or justify exoenditure to the other clubs ??? And know that as a business it would not survive independently in the long term. ?

Well seems V’landys was right.

What a flop the NRL9s has turned out to be in Perth.

There was such optimism too. A real hunger for rugby league in Western Australia we were told.
After successfully bringing State of Origin II to Western Australia's Optus Stadium earlier this year, Annesley said the state's hunger for rugby league is clear and the 20,500-capacity HBF Park is the ideal venue.

"The sell-out crowd in Perth for State of Origin highlighted how much interest West Australians have in rugby league and we are committed to growing the game here," he said.

And what’s this... Perth no longer in consideration for hosting next year?

This isn't AFL! our options aren't limited. Our circumstances will change and the next chairman might think differently (Australia, the pacific, Europe, our options are virtually limitless. I read today Storm have been in talks with the Wolfpacks owners. Geez its good to be popular.
Rugby League, the dominant force in Australian sport!

NRL could afford to run a team.. but this is not how sports work. (you do not fund a club for the benefit of making this club bigger)
that is the difference with the AFL & NRL

private /community based will be the best way forward.
i expect government would also step in with funds.
