Yes you are both correct. I also like how talking about international doesn’t actually address the point made ... re rl bring virtually non existent outside nsw and qld at grassroot level. This seems like a topic many rl zealots refuse to acknowledge or have trouble acknowledging .... they can’t deny it so it seems to sit uneasy.
Fred the reason you don't like talking about the international game is because the international game is non existing for AFL.. =D

You said Rugby League has nothing as far as grassroots outside NSW & QLD. You never mentioned in Australia at any time lol..

Don't try to backpeddle out of your bullshit claim.

The facts are Rugby League has 28 first grade clubs in 5 countries and that is not even including PNG as a reserve grade club. Meanwhile AFL can't even get decent grassroots support in not 1 single other country.

AFL can't even field a competitive reserve grade club outside Australia.
Is actually very funny.
your game is a simplified version rip off of a popular game union something that has been around for centuries around the world! even then your stupiedfied version is still only popular in some countries where union is played

yet you think some how its popular on its own :(/

Hey. Totally agree afl is not International at any real level. It doesn’t bother me either ... doesn’t impact my enjoyment of the game one bit. I don’t care if it is only played in a small island off Peru for that matter ... again... as long as it doesn’t impact my enjoyment of the game. The cultural cringe I thought had gone after the Sydney olympics of needing the world to like Australia and the world approval. Aussie Rules is played across the length and breadth of this great country, it is our national football code by a long way, it’s ours and I don’t need some foreigner to approve or otherwise ... who cares. We love it as a nation (mostly) and I enjoy it. All that matters really.

It's popular outside of NSW, QLD and the ACT, it is not our national sport, that honour belongs to Cricket and Tennis who share it evenly.

I just posted the truth, sometimes the truth hurts.

RL is the number 1 winter sport for viewers and attendances on the East coast of Australia and the AFL is the number 1 winter sport in the rest of the nation.

I’d argue it is very popular in qls. Bit as popular as rl for sure but I’d say it’s popular. And aussie rules can pretty much be played all over Australia at senior and junior levels as well. So can soccer I know but when you add in that and tv coverage, ratings, media presence, brand awareness ... I think aussie rules outstripped soccer when looked at overall. As for rl it is growing in Melbourne although very very slowly but there are large areas in country Victoria what don’t even have leagues or clubs for kids to play. I assume it’s worse for SA although there had been a push in wa at grassroots which is good... still very small. Tassie .... I do not believe that they have a league ... there was one but I think it fell over. So maybe National winter sport.

Why are AFL nearly always shown on 7mate in NSW and QLD if it is so popular?
A station which rates round 4%. Why don't AFL put their games on the main channel 7?

As has been pointed out the question I was responding to was about the nrl ... a local comp. thank you for pointing out international rl where it appears to be doing okay however My reference when I said outside nsw and qld was in reference to Australia so hope that clears that up.

My apologies and thank you for qualifying. To be clear I was indeed referring to Australia in my comments about rl being virtually non existent at grassroots level outside nsw and qld. Hope that clears it up. And to head off any further comments about Australian rules football ... it is not international at all really ... rl is far bigger outside Australia than Australian rules football. I was just referencing Rl at grassroots level in Australia being virtually non existent outside qld and nsw.

Now back to the question we were discussing.

strong amateur league played by thousands all over Qld and new
near zero people play league out side of those states

but but but those fe rating boxes
gotta love how several games through out the year more people are at the ground, that are recorded watching the game.
more people pay to see a game and take time out of their day as oppose to are recorded watching the game

that sums up those 3k or so rating boxes
Australian sporting sponsorship

I think no one disagrees that afl is by no way the major sport in qld and even less so in nsw. SEQ has a very strong Aussie rules culture but totally agree that a true sign of people taking it more on board on those states would be for it to be on FTA main channel. In fact I believe the AFL subsidise through their broadcast rights deal by including a clause that it needs to be shown live into qld and nsw. I think when we see afl shows in general on fta in prime spots we will have seen real growth. I think a problem is showing lions and suns games over more popular games like collingwood playing Richmond .... this would rate far far better than Suns v birth Melbourne for instance. I think they did show a few games on the main channel last year however not sure how that went.
